Ajax all over Madrid so far, just hit the crossbar too

    Big save from Courtois.

And two minutes later he spills it! 1-0 Ajax.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,611 ✭✭✭✭ERG89

If Madrid played like this against Atletico it paints a very grim picture of Atletico right now.
1-0 Ajax they could have 1 or 2 more by now.

Ajax through on goal and miss a 1 on 1. Now just scored. All over Madrid. Could have had a couple

The officials here to save Madrid as usual

Not a hope that would have been disallowed if Madrid scored that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Goal has been ruled out. Think that's very harsh. Courtois didn't react in the moment as if he felt he'd been hard done by.

Same old story. Always huge calls in big moments going Madrids way. Every year in nearly every game

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,805 ✭✭✭Rezident

Football is so corrupt. Ajax playing brilliantly, score a perfectly good goal but of course Madrid have to win in the CL for their sponsors or whatever. No wonder they win it every year, and it's certainly not with their football, Madrid have been poor, again. Not that it matters.

So true, Madrid have actually been playing rubbish for the last few years, but they don't need to play well when they own the refs and the politicians running football.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭The Golden Miller

Ajax battering Madrid at half time, but UEFA seem intent on getting Madrid through again.

It is such a shame that the CL has been cheapened with the pro-madrid cheating the last few years. It's beyond a joke now. I thought they way they cheated Bayern was bad but now it's just risible. The Madrid players must be embarrassed.

Had to search for the goal after reading this thread. Was expecting something outrageous, instead its an obvious and correct decision..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,113 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

How is it offside. It was a header on goal and the Ajax player wasn't interfering with Courtouis getting back to the goal line so how was he interfering with play. Absolute nonsense.

A couple of people in here need to dry their eyes. Correct decision was made by officials.

Had it been at the other end, VAR wouldn't even have been suggested

Just saw it, ridiculous decision. On a side note, I never knew that Steve Nash(NBA legend)does football analysis.

Just seeing that Ajax goal, Ajax player when the ball was headed was offside and blocking the keeper so yes it was the correct call. Just going to have to get used to this VAR.

Keeper wouldn't of even got it regardless

What was he blocking the keeper from doing?

    Which is irrelevant

Lads he literally touched the keeper, that's interfering with play.

From the quick view i seen looked like the keeper was trying to get to the ball, it was given as offside it was offside so the right call was made. Without VAR it would have stood 99% of the time

Not really interfering with play then

He was interfering with the keeper getting to the ball but that was from the save. So he can't be offside from that. From the header (when he could be offside) he wasn't interfering with the keeper at all. It's an incorrect call. The offside can only be giving from the moment the header occurs. As the ball wasn't traveling forward before that. When the header occurred he wasn't interfering with the keeper.

First use of VAR and it's a wrong call

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

He was in an offside position when the scoring header was struck. He stopped the keeper from coming out, he was interfering with play. Was a good decision.

But that wasn't after a forward pass. That was from the save. After every forward pass in that move there was no interfering at all

How can he be offside when the last recent play was a save from the keeper and the ball was traveling away from goal.

Madrid will be delighted with the VAR talk as it's hiding quite a poor performance. They are fortunate this Ajax side are very green at this level.

When the ball was headed towards goal he was offside, you can be offside when a shot is taken, he was standing in front of the keeper. He affected the keepers ability to save/see it.

He was offside when the ball was headed forward towards goal and standing right in front of the keeper

The keepers ability to do what? He was in front of the keeper and the ball was above him. There was no interfering after the header

Benzema with a great finish after nice work from Vinicius.

To react to the header, whether he could get it or not. I'm sure it'll come out whether it was the right call or not so we'll know for sure soon enough.

Var in favour of Real Madrid, there's a surprise.

De Jong looked to be bundled over in the build up there.

Just how do Real get the decisions in there favour every fecking year. They just have a gift for it.

Great result for Spurs. Dortmund were much the better team in first half. At least can go and concentrate on the league now and stop the Bayern winning run.

Edit: massive chance missed by Dolberg. Great move from Ajax.

Saw the Ajax disallowed goal. Not sure what everyone is complaining about, it's the correct decision. Yeah, it would have stood if VAR wasn't in place but it is and it was correctly disallowed.

How come VAR didn't see Vasquez rugby tackle an Ajax midfielder to the ground in the build up to Asensio's goal?

I admittedly haven’t seen too much of him, but if Foyth plays at that standard on a consistent basis then that’s some player Spurs have on their hands.

    He was immense tonight.

Nah i wouldn't be disallowing the goal because of that, the same way they were right not to go to Var for a potential foul in the build it up to the Ajax goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,050 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

When it was announced VAR was coming in, I heard a few folk say, "that's Real Madrid beat now".

And now apparently they are using VAR to cheat as well.

    They can't win.

Why not? This is the point really, you can find a tedious technicality to disallow most goals, it's just Madrid seem to get all the 50/50 calls. Ever since Madrid won their first Champions League in their recent 4 out of 5 wins, there's been major calls in many of their knock-out games every year at crucial moments, which have changed the dynamic of the whole tie. These things normally even themselves out, but rightly or wrongly, Madrid have come out on top in all of those major calls at crucial moments, the Bayern game in 17 being a complete farce. Fixed or not, it's getting ridiculous at this stage, that you know there will be a crucial moment that's at least 50/50, and everytime it will go in Madrid's favour and turn the tie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,191 ✭✭✭✭Shanotheslayer

Is it 50/50 if it always goes in Madrid's favour ? :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,977 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Oh true.
But if they won 2 games in a row, your contention that "the results would put them in contention for winning the league if they kept it up for a full season" would be just as valid. And to think you accused me of "stupid comments"!

Anyway, I see you don't really want to set out the teams they beat in their recent good run. I'll retain my opinion that they are lazy and overpaid based on what preceded that run, and what reappeared last night, you are perfectly entitled to disagree. It's all about opinions.
Well the only reason I got involved was to tell you how stupid your attempt to wind up United fans was.
It was and still is a pathetic post.

I felt bad for Ajax tonight, they played really well and deserved to win the match. I hope they can take heart from the quality of their performance and believe they can pull something off in the second leg. I've no love for Real Madrid, but....

Thought the decision for the VAR disallowed goal was marginal but the correct one. He's marginally offside - which is to say he's offside - and he's definitely impeding the keeper. Correct call. Whether it would have been given if Real had scored it is unanswerable whataboutery. It's fun to go on about UEFA conspiracies and all, but that was a correct decision.

As for the "rugby tackle" I saw it more as an attempt by the Ajax player to prevent the run of the Real Madrid player and, if anything, could have been a free for Madrid. The Madrid player was trying to get forward and the Ajax midfielder was doing his best to prevent him running past. There honestly wasn't much in it - to have called it back there for a foul would have been ridiculous.
