Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Am I imagining things or does the Schalke pitch look absolutely massive? Must be max size for sure.

    it's like watching ants

Aguero makes it 1-0 to City. Schalke not happy as they think there was a foul in the build up. Not sure there was.

Nothing wrong with Laporte's header. Amazed there was even the slightest doubt about it.

Even if it was a foul, it's a stretch for them to argue the goal should be disallowed, given the nature of the goal.

VAR excitement or is it boredom, no it's excitement peno given

    Never a penalty.

    1-1.

Martin Keown just invented a new word, spontinuity.

Funny call that. But it was a shot on target, and his hand did deflect it wide, it effected the travel of the ball. That of course is not the rule though/

The ridiculousness of the ref giving out to both teams for asking for VAR on decisions, only to justify Schalke's protests 5 seconds later by giving a penalty.

I thought my clothes were going to be back in fashion by the time that decision was reached.

The delay didn't faze Bentaleb. Good pen.

City are a bit sloppy tonight

Martin Keown just invented a new word, spontinuity.

It's a perfectly cromulent word that embiggens the debate

City are flawed, Shalke showed them too much respect early in game.

    Yellow for Fernandinho, peno awarded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,387 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Unlike PL refs, European refs can somehow see Fernandinho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Another peno. Not a peno either. Touched his hips but not enough to go down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,468 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

    Another penalty,

Another Schalke pen?! Bentaleb to take again.

Another cool pen. Now this is interesting.

Ages to come to the wrong decision and Schalke able to watch the replays on the bench which isn't allowed. I'm a fan of VAR but it's got a long way to go.

    Benteleb again 2-1

Brilliant penalty, he's a confident classy player.

Quite a contrast between fabinho performance last night and fernandinhos tonight playing centre half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,363 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

As an aside, De Bruyne does not look right.

Fernandinho not getting away with his usual bull**** that he gets away with every week in the Premiership

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,612 ✭✭✭eigrod

I think penalty was the correct decision both times. Why did Fernandinho put his two hands on the guys hips as he was trying to get away from him? Asking for trouble doing that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,695 ✭✭✭✭osarusan

Schalke looked woeful for the first 10-15 minutes, and fairly poor up until the first penalty.

I expected the first to be given when it went to VAR, I thought Otamendi's arm was a bit high for a bit long.

Man City just look a bit slow and disjointed.

    Bentaleb playing really well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭blueser

In my (biased) opinion, the second penalty was soft, but probably correct. Not so sure about the first one, mind. But we've brought this upon ourselves. Very sloppy since going ahead. Shades of the Palace, Leicester and Newcastle games.

Var needs refs who book players for arguing about a decision that the ref isn't making, that was farcical.

One thing is for sure the first penalty was given through an opinion of incident, not a fact based decision. If it was black and white it should have taken 3 seconds to tell ref, penalty!

''For a decision it must be a "clear error" Obviously the VAR team were arguing among themselves regarding the first penalty.

VAR should be more simple. Just forget the team locked in a room somewhere and just let the assigned Ref look at a monitor and review it, let him make the call only.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

both penalties were soft. think what worked against City for the first one was the distance between Mendy and the strike but he did seem to be trying to get his arm out of the way.

Problem with the second is you'll have players flinging themselves to the ground at the slightest touch. Fernandinho shouldn't have done what he did but probably not enough contact for the guy to go flying.

    The screen wasn't working. Farcical.

How could you or the referee possibly tell this? The slightest touch can send a player over if he's off balance. All the officials can do in those circumstances is answer to the best of their ability the yes/no question, "Was there illegal contact?"

Shalke could win tie tonight if City collapse

    Harsh second yellow I thought.

VAR on the other game disallowed Madrid goal for a very soft free kick

Same issue with the Atletico 'goal' there. If the referee deems there was a push by the striker he has to disallow it, whether Chielini 'went down easy' is an irrelevance...

Madrid goal that stands and Juve player play acting holding his face then looks to see what is going on see Madrid score and then rolls around again holding his face hoping for a VAR again

    Deserved.

Schalke are realistically no good. The pitch has also played a part by the way.
