Whatever about the quality of the games they make, Bethesda simply do not make good software and because the software they make is games, they've gotten a pass for far too long on being called up on that because a small but dedicated number of their consumers are usually engaged enough and have enough skill to fix the bad software, but this isn't an open source project that should function through collaborative efforts of many people, it's a licenced product sold for hard cash and the people who make it work see almost none of that reward (donations and tip-jars on Nexus Mods not withstanding).

Consumers continuing to reward this reprehensible behaviour will not see it improve. How many years has the meme of how broken a Bethesda ES or Fallout game is on launch has been in existence? Why is it that Bethesda knows it can publicly say "this game will definitely not work when we launch it" and people will still pre-order like lemmings jumping off a cliff?

It takes 2 to tango - in this case it's Bethesda and the rubes who keep supporting them.

would this be worth 40 quid? its on sale on psn but i dont know.

  • would this be worth 40 quid? its on sale on psn but i dont know.

    Why do it to yourself?
All the warning signs are there.
And no wonder it's already on sale. I've seen it in Smyths and even GameStop with slashed prices of nearly 20-30 euros.

Supporting this thrash makes it acceptable to release it in such a state.
And it's performance on PS4 even after a stupidly massive patch apparently is just as bad as it was at launch.

I recommend waiting a few months and see if they can stabilize the game and actually add some meaningful content then maybe it might be worth it in a sale.

On PC I was lucky in that I had 60 FPS out of the beta on day one with 1060 GPU while people with 1080 or better were getting less. Post-launch and after a few patches my FPS have dropped like a stone for no reason... so yea. wonderful start... going to give up on this game until they bring in mods and private servers (that may be a few years) and fix the broken crap as its unplayable as it is

I’ll put it to you this way - if this was free on PS plus I wouldn’t even add it to the library.

I'm enjoying it. I wouldn't recommend it to a soul, but there you have it.

I would say if you're expecting a classic Fallout experience and 100-200 hours of gameplay - not a hope you could recommend the game at all.

If you're a Fallout fan and wouldn't mind passing 20-30 hours just wandering around a new map, and exploring new lore and tales of life shortly after the bombs fell, it's not remotely as horrible as being made out, just very flawed.

I'm in the latter. Regret spending €60 on it, but I'm enjoying it every now and again, I doubt I'll put more than 30 hours into it but that's not a terrible return in my books either.

I saw a post that they were giving refunds for this game. That sound fair with all the bad reviews they have been receiving.

I think refunds are fair if you're trying to play it and it's a stuttering mess when fighting more than 3 enemies.

I did find the update helped to be honest.

Could you imagine if R* were getting the same piss poor results from the rage engine as Bethesda are out of the creation engine?

Wonder what we'd get if ID did a fallout/Es game?

    Been waiting for this :pac:
The fact that nuke codes are only changed weekly and can be reused and that the server can't handle more than 1 nuke going off at a time is exactly what makes the game such a joke; such basic issues should simply not exist in a triple AAA game charging full price.

I sow this was on Microsoft sale last night already. 46eu lol. The only game I remember drop so fast was Battlefront 2.

I don't usually watch Angry Joe, but he's not wrong in what he said there. It's a disgrace that Bethesda released the game in its current state. The game is beyond broken from what everyone says, and there are bugs in it from years ago that were fixed by the community in Fallout 4. They couldn't even be bothered to steal the fixes from modders...they'd rather release the game beyond broken.

Anyone who pre-ordered this kind of deserves what they are getting.

  • How are they letting this happen?
Their reputation is getting hammered and they continue to make it worse.

Getting sued now for not full-filling refunds

They're worth billions, they'll laugh at a lawsuit.

None of this will matter long-term anyway because everyone will get all starry-eyed at Todd Howard again when the new Elder Scrolls comes out.

On the same engine with the same flaws at release...

Todd will make a witty remark about Bethesda games having the odd bug or two and everyone will laugh along with him and say "Ohhh, Bethesda! We still love you!"

The problem here is that the community fixes will be script-based workarounds to said issues and Bethesda are either unwilling or unable to adapt those script changes into the main release of the game.

In order to properly fix the problems, however, they'd more than likely need to make systemic changes to the engine which they seem unwilling to do. That's a subject for a different post though.

I don't think so. The response to this game has been vastly different to any of there other releases and is a monumental failure on their behalf.
People won't be as accepting of this in the future after the poor sales, refund requests, critical and user reception, false advertising, a masked beta which was essentially the full game and players paying full price to continue to beta test.

All free passes looked to have expired.

I don't think it's a question of how much they are worth but their reputation.

Their value will soon decline with a damaged reputation in the gaming world and people stop buying their games.

I would be be very cautious of future Bethesda games because of this and don't think I'd be the only one.

I wholeheartedly agree with you and in an ideal world that would be the case for the future. But you only need to look at any example of an E3 announcement video to realise how forgetful and stupid gamers can be. Brand loyalty, hype-trains, people who defend unethical practices by publishers, and a solid digital marketing campaign can easily paint over those old cracks and give the appearance of a game which has learned from the mistakes of its predecessors.

Bethesda need to win back the good favour it has held on to for years now. An announcement that Starfield and ES6 will run on a brand new engine might begin to repair the damage. Otherwise people will have an automatic and skeptical view that Starfield and ES6 will just be 'another 76'.

There is still so many randomly incredible moments in this game. I hope they keep at it and build it into something that repays the people who paid 60 plus quid for it.

The response was different because despite some major bugs, their previous games such as Morrowind, Skyrim and Fallout 3, were pretty damn amazing at the time but with Fallout 4 and the whole paid mods ruckus, consumers were a lot more vocal in their unhappiness with Bethesda. It's really sad to see a developer piss away decades worth of goodwill but considering how poorly thought out some of the gameplay elements of Fallout 76 are, even a first time indie dev team would be getting it in the neck nevermind game designers who have been in the business for so long.

I wouldn't put too much faith in E3 crowds being a yardstick for the gaming public as most of the clappers, yellers and cheerers are company shills planted in the front rows. Brand loyalty is of course a thing but so is the amount of long-lasting criticism these days when company's screw over customers. You only have to look at any of EA's recent titles, Ubisoft's melted faces in Assassins Creed, Gearbox getting lambasted to this day for Aliens: Colonial Marines and the years of out and out graft Hello Games had to do to get back into positive standing over No Man's Sky. The internet does not forget.

Sadly, it's already been confirmed ES6 is using the same engine as Fallout 76.
