Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yes actually as that was the easy part. Could you now advise the players that the above are better than and should replace? Aside from Billy Nolan as again he's already on the panel.

So without getting into the merits of your inclusions and exclusions, and ignoring the petty comment, your clear out consists of omitting 7 players while adding a further 15?

Brian O Sullivan and Gavin O Brien have been tried and are both definitely not good enough.

Padraig Pendergast must be near 30 now so hard to see him making it back.

Paudie is 26 at some stage this year, plenty of hurling left in him, look at Gearoid McInerny only getting his chance at that age. Brian O’Sullivan has been outstanding for Ballygunner over the last few years and would have been a huge a addition to Derek’s side. I’d love to see both involved again.

I just think the Brian O Sullivan suggestion smacks of irony given how he was scapegoated in 2014, and used as a stick to beat McGrath with.

He's probably good enough to be in the panel but is 30 if I'm not mistaken and to be honest would rather see younger players or Tommy Ryan given their chance ahead of him.

Hearing tonight that fanning will be announced in the next few days. Hearing his team is Browne, dunne and dan Shanahan.

No, for what it’s worth I’m suggesting these people be brought in to be tried out and that the fellas I named currently on the squad could be replaced by some new blood. I’m not for one minute saying they add another 15 while dropping 7.
There are fellas on the current squad that are in a comfort zone and as long as there aren’t any new additions then it isn’t going to change. Were we the only county this year that never added to the panel? That isn’t good enough at all.

Heard last night Fannings backroom team was Paul Flynn, Tony Browne, James Murray and Dan

Really hope they announce it so they can start planning

Def a bit of an underwhelming choice but we just have to wait and see. Being in 1B might suite us

Paudie Pender is 25, should have a good few years left in him but has been off the panel with 3 or 4 years now so might be hard for him to get back up to that level of fitness and conditioning. Brian O'Sullivan was deemed not good enough as far back as Davy Fitz time but then again Tommy Ryan came with a bit of a late coming in his 20s there's no reason why Brian Sull couldn't offer the same.

Some people will believe a 15,500 ground in the current location is enough, others won't.

It will be meet the needs for some games but not others. If a game is a dead rubber or home to limerick or clare the attendance will be grant. Club championship gran, league fixtures grans.

At home to cork or tipp or a final game where winning would mean qualification attendance won't be plenty full.

Either way I would like to think once completed we won't have to play away from home again

25,000 to 30,000 would be ideal but this is what we have.

Its a start and who knows, maybe in 5-10 years they can expand further.

Pointless having a stadium that big that will be full once in a blue moon. Look at the fanbase Munster have and their stadium is only that size.

As someone said, this stadium will fit certain needs. It won't be near enough for a championship game against Tipp, Wexford, Kilkenny or Cork. You could probably add Limerick and Clare to that now that they are strong again.

Yet Ennis was fine to host games this year? When we are fixed to play Munster games in 2020 at home, provided we have it all sorted, we will be hosting it. Whether it’s cork, Tipp, Limerick or Clare won’t matter a damn. Kildare showed that very clearly this year.

I just think the whole GAA idea of having these massive stadiums that might be full once a year is stupid and complete waste of money

Is it such a bad thing that bandwagoners can't get a ticket to a game every now and again?

Going back to Munster as an example they regularly sell out games in Europe but then its half empty for the Pro 14 but you dont hear people saying the stadium should be bigger

There was a crowd of 20,782 at Tipperary's home game against Clare this year, yet 15,500 won't be enough to accommodate all the fans they might bring to an away game in Waterford?

Problem with Thurles is that everyone has to commute.

With Walsh Park you have 50,000 Waterford people with easy access. Plus the novelty of having championship in Waterford should last a few years.

Hard to say whether that makes it more likely to fill is hard to say but it's certainly more accessible than Semple.

Don't forget the government is targeting massive growth in Waterford up to 2040. This stadium is fine now, will it be fine when we have a much bigger population?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,243 ✭✭✭deiseach

I think people really understate the value of this. We played Clare in 2012 and 2013 in Thurles and the crowd at each game barely scraped past 12,000. A home-and-away arrangement would have worked just fine (Walsh Park was able to comfortably host a crowd in the region of 9,000 for the Under-21 final against Tipperary in 2016) and there might have been all manner of rí rá agus ruaille buaille in and around the grounds rather than everyone rattling around a stadium capable of accommodating a crowd four times the size. This also applies to League games and county finals, which will be the staple of the venue. Small can be beautiful.

Waterford city and county population is somewhere between 90k and 100k. Corks population is 500k and have yet to see PUC full.

Limerick population is 200k and have yet to see the gaelic grounds full.

Tipps population is 160k and not one of their home games was full this year. 20k at tipp v clare.

Walsh park will be more than enough. 5k and 7k at Kilkenny and wexford in this years home league games, 2k at last year's county final.

Get the diggers in and get it done.

Easier to assess demand then when it's actually in use and see if more is needed.

People are underestimating the advantage of playing at home in a tight ground with the crowd close to the pitch. 15,000 in Walsh park for a championship game will create a great atmosphere and give us, for the first time in years, an actual home "advantage".

No reason why they can't develop a good surface up there. The RSC is in an actual bog/marsh and it's one of the best field surfaces in the country.

it is also the smallest pitch in the hurling championship for teams competing for liam mccarthy, not at all conducive to our hurling.

we have the lowest win % in a home ground for all the teams competing for all Ireland for league and champ games going back to 1998 & also the lowest scoring average.

Our best performances have come in Pairc ui Caoimh 60 odd % winning percentage, Nowlan park about the same & Thurles.

They are numbers 1, 2 & 3 in pitch size in Ireland.

Our worst ground is Limerick - 13% winning ratio. tightest pitch but not the smallest.

Of course the county board know all of this information!!

Rough measurement on Google Maps gives 145m long x 80m wide. Not sure how that measures up against other grounds.

Attendance for limerick v waterford 23,194 (gaelic grounds capacity just shy of 50k)

Attendance for cork v limerick 34,607 (PUC capacity (45000)

Far from full in both your suggestions.

Clares population is similar to waterfords a bit more 120k and they couldn't fill cusack for their game against us 13k or so attended.

Semple is also 145m X 80m. Semple looks bigger due to the high stands. WP looks tiny as you are never more than a few metres above the pitch, giving the impression that it's tiny.

100% correct. If They can get pitch right should make a good stadium. For all there shortfalls you have to give them credit for getting planning permission over the line.
