I’m a bit confused by this. You have a full back who has never played the position, .

Actually beg to differ on this. Darragh Fives has played fullback, I remember specifically a Munster u21 game v Tipp in Thurles a few years back when we were robbed by a dodgy ref the same day.

Has never even been considered there at senior level though so cant see him going back there at this stage.
I think if you trawl through teams of the past you'll find strange decisions and placements of players ,the one that springs to mind is Davy Fitz,s decision to play Ken mc Grath at full back wtf, and to a lesser extent (at least he was on the right side of the field) place Eoin Kelly at corner forward, D Fives will have to do some amount of work to get himself into that team , lovely hurler with no luck , hope that changes , he could be a great asset in this team, and not be curtailed as he was under mc Grath ,ie not a loud to cross the half way line , the lads that have the jersey are in control at the moment and thats the way it should be .looking forward to Sunday ,it should be a great day, at least we travel now with excitement .

I wonder whether someone in Thurles has pissed off someone in Croke Park. The usual habit of yerra let's put any neutral hurling match (and quite a few non-neutral ones) there seems to be falling out of favour.

Get over Galway and we have to trek up to Dublin to a half empty and atmosphere-less Croke Park for a league final. I'd take Thurles, Portlaoise, Tullamore or any provincial ground for a league final over a dead Croke Park, at least there might be some atmosphere present. Pointless bringing the football up there as well if Kerry are in it as well as they'd probably bring 5,000 max, whereas if they are playing Mayo or Galway which is most likely, Limerick would be an ideal venue.

Michael Duignan tipped Waterford to win a close game on morning Ireland this morning. I nearly crashed my car with the shock

Thurles would be pretty dead as well. I guess it would be the better venue for a game against Limerick but why not Kilkenny or Portlaoise for one against Dublin? A little imagination in these things isn't too much to ask. Although mentioning Limerick in the context of a Kerry-Mayo game...:D

Croke park might be an option for a double header due to the Dublin footballers missing out.

Kerry Galway for instance wouldn't bring much of a crowd so doubling it up with the hurling is a decent idea.

Might be testing the water for a double header of league finals at Patrick's Day. The club finals on that day has long lost its neutral appeal.

Kerry would bring a higher crowd than you night believe. There would be a lot from Kerry and Limerick that would travel up and make a day of it.

Should Limerick win its an ideal double header to go to.

I thought the pitch in Thurles didn't look the best in the Dublin Tipp game so it's probably for the best.

It'll be a double header in Croker because they'll need the extra attendance to make up for the fact that Dublin footballers won't be in the final.

People need to relax and worry about Sunday first instead of the final!

Galway have introduced a lot of new players and experimented in this league.
Brian Concannon has impressed in the forwards while Canning seems to be in excellent form. Cathal Mannon at midfield also seems to be working as he is chipping in with scores which will allow Johnny Coen return to the backs come championship but he could even start this weekend. They’ve also put Padraig Mannion at centre back and McInerney to the wing but I think they may revert as both are possibly suited to their more natural positions, although McInerney was moved to full back last Sunday to sure up the full back line which I would see as their weakness. I think Padraig Mannion is out of this weekends match so Coen will slip on to the wing with MacInerney at CB. Fair play to Jack Grealish who has left a flourishing soccer career with Aston Villa to pursue his hurling but I do think Waterford can get at the Galway full back line as Tuohy, Burke and Hanbury don’t seem to be playing and with the 2 Bennett’s and Hogan/Ryan actually playing inside, we have a strong scoring threat. Patrick Curran played for his club this week so also may see game time you would think.

You're right about thinking ahead to the final but strongly fancy Waterford this Sunday all the same (not quite as much as I fancied us to beat Dublin).

Given a choice, I would say the players would prefer to play the final in Croke Park (experience for later in the year and all that).

At least Grealish is unlikely to be assaulted on Sunday by a fan running onto the pitch.

Lyons at full back is a funny one in general. Is it a worry that we don’t seem to have settled on anyone there yet?

He played full back against Clare for most of the game. Prunty’s injury obviously deprived us of our first choice option there. Shane Fives probably back up and hasn’t been available. Conor Gleeson unavailable throughout the league.
I’m not sure who we could have settled on there minus our 3 best options for there but Callum Lyons hasn’t done much wrong at all when wing back or indeed full back on Shanagher last Saturday.

Agreed, don’t get me wrong, but it’s a worry if we go into championship without really knowing who the best option at full back is. You’ve named 4 quality hurlers there, while it’s great to have options, it’s the one position that you can’t really chop and change from week to week. Given that we’re looking strong in literally every other position on the field I wouldn’t want this to be our Achilles heel

Looking at the Galway side it looks like they could be starting with a sweeper. Will be interesting to see how we deal with that if so. Delighted to see Tadgh back he’s a colossal defender and one which we need going into Sunday’s game. It’ll be some battle as Galway have injuries also but they’re still a serious outfit even minus their injured players. Really looking forward to it.

TDB is indeed a fine hurler ,hopefully he will kwep progrrssing .under Mc Grath he had it somewhat easy being a sweeper in a defence that at times, had as much as 9 possibly 10 defenders .and he was seriously over worked .with waterford playing 1 or two forwards the ball was in his area more that he or the defence could deal with at times .playing man on man now he has an awful lot to prove and hopefully he will .i thing at this stage even Noel Connors could be an option .its almost impossible to get around him.he is unbelievably sticky and a super hurler .not a man to be messed with .

De burca to full back is something that has to happen eventually for me. Like you say the sweeper is gone now he needs to re establish himself somewhere. We’re loaded with options in the half backline already, there’s definetly an opening to move him back there now. Hes physically powerful as well as having the natural ability.

He could certainly play there I reckon but Tadhg is such an outstanding centre back, with Austin playing in the forwards I think it’s going to be tough not to play Tadhg centre back. Darragh Fives has shown no evidence he can be relied on to remain injury free sadly. Philip isn’t as dominant in the air as Tadhg, although I would happily have Philip in the half back line.
I can’t see that line changing from Philip Tadhg and Moran barring injuries with Austin pushed forward. If Darragh is to find a starting place anywhere he might have to show midfield. Although having options such as Darragh on the bench to start the campaign would be brilliant as there will undoubtedly be injuries and rotation will be very important I feel come May.

Having a solid full back is paramount for me before settling on a lot of other positions. I maintain we missed out on an AI in the noughties partly because we didn’t have a solid fullback. I think of 04 and 07 in particular and goals that were leaked in those semi finals. A half backline with the likes of Ken McGrath and Tony Browne in it wasn’t even enough. We had a stop gap with Coughlan for a few years but with the sweeper now effectively gone there’s a lot more open space in that area in front of the keeper again. Ideally you’d like a Daithi Burke protecting the house in there, I’m not convinced we have that, but maybe tdb is the closest thing

When Prunty is injury free, he's our full back I reckon. Let's see how Calum goes tomorrow.

Just bought the game on GAAGO, looking forward to it now. Anyone know how soon after a game ends when you can watch it back on GAAGO? Or is it even possible to watch back from the start while the game is still going on in real time?

Best of luck to Pauric and the lads today, will be a big challenge getting another one over Galway so soon after beating them only two weeks ago but the boys are in good form. Would be great to get back to a league final.
