Bought myself my dream bike this week and I need to get some bits and pieces now before I take her out on her maiden voyage

I cycle around 75-100km per spin and I go alone

What do you guys recommend? I was half tempted to pick up bike computer, lights, clothes but not sure where to buy and what to be looking out for

Also, can you guys recommend a high quality lock?

    All the best

Bottle cages, Garmin bike computer, Garmin varia rear light, bontrager flare R rear light.

You need about as much money for accessories as for your bike 8-).

    Good things
    - a bright flashy front and back light.
    - a saddle bag with tube, levers, multitool, couple of cable ties, spare chain link, pack of stick-on patches
    - a pump

A decent pair of shorts (search here and elsewhere for recommendations)
A pair of sunglasses (too many to choose from; Oakley are popular but expensive)
A pair of gloves (I like the Specialist Grails, but they are thin).
A breathable waterproof jacket (I like the Gore One...)

I assume you have clip pedals and shoes. If not...get them. I prefer SPD, but 'road' ones with huge cleats are, for some reason, more popular.

As with many things, you can spend as much or (almost) as little as you like on a lot of this stuff. But decent shorts are worth having.

If you dont have proper shorts they're the most important thing. Good padding is key.
    C02 and inflator
    Saddle bag
    Quick Link
    Chainbreaker
    Tube x2
    Tyre Levers
    Water bottles

    For spins? A hiplock.

My bike came with pedals. The brand is Look Keo Max 2. What shoes/cleats would fit them?

  • Registered Users Posts: 36,167 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    Its in the name, Keo.

Cleats may come in the accessories bag, check.

PS: I worry you've splashed €5k on a new Look build without doing much homework if thats the question you're asking.

Any SPD-SL shoe with 3 bolt holes on the sole. My preference is for Diadora shoes (I have 4 pairs of them) but pick what you like and can afford.

I was half tempted to buy one but people are recommending a Garmin computer instead?

Prob a ridiculous question, but is there anywhere that offers bike maintenance classes? Even just to cover the basics

OP you couldn't possibly have your dream bike so early in your cycling .... you never have your dream bike ....there is always one out there, even when you momentarily think you have it. :)

Best of luck, it's a great pastime..... enjoy.

Garmin 520 is a decent piece of kit , me I just stick my phone into a zippy sandwich bag... cheap and cheerful and works fine... throw a tenner in there too .

If you seen my old bike then you would see why I think my new bike is my ‘dream bike’ because my old one gave me nothing but heartache and almost a heart attack at times ha

Thank you though, appreciate the kind words :)

Would the Wiggle site be the best source to buy clothing, accessories etc?

I have a bunch of questions regarding maintenance etc but I don’t want to start a new post. If I went into my local bike shop, would the bike mechanic be helpful in answering?

Check out “global cycling network” on YouTube. They have loads of really good maintenance vids, advice etc.

Depends on the item. I tend to use wiggle, chain reaction cycles or Merlin cycles.

It’s handy for other stuff too. I’ve three kids at home so can see whatsapp messages, texts from the wife that I’m
Good to go for an extra hour. Google maps, work emails if skiving off etc

OMG!... U look at your phone when out on the bike... I leave mine in a sandwich bag switched off and out of fight when on the bike. It’s one of the few times I feel properly disconnected which is how it should be!!
    Tut tut!

When you're shopping for clothing its good to read the reviews on each site for each item. Different brands have different ideas on sizing, so it's helpful for getting the best fit. I tend to research on the different sites to decide what item I want and then google the item to find the best price as it can vary drastically. When the grand tours are on (Giro, TdF and Veulta) a lot of sites will have special deals on. Planet X always have deals on and do some good bundles of gear.
For maintenance, as mentioned earlier GCN on youtube cover pretty much everything as well as Parktools and many other youtubers. If you search youtube for anything maintenance related you'll get plenty of hits.

You might even get good tips on here too
