The soil is a clay soil and is drying on top with the weather. I read that bare soil will lose a lot of nutrients.

The plan is to grow a lawn for now and then build a patio at some stage. my question is should I just go straight to lawn seed or try some green manure to help with soil structure/nutrients?

The total area when I'm finished taking up footpath will be around 40ft x 20ft.
