Seen it announced today that Sammon, the main builders of the Maynooth Education Campus have collapsed. All linked to Carrilion collapsing in the UK earlier in the year.

Minister for Education is to put it out for retender, but between subcontractors now being left hundreds of thousands out of pocket, a half completed project to be inspected and new developers to be found - this is all bound to cause huge delays to its completion.

So now Maynooth will be missing 2 planned secondary schools - meant to be amongst largest in Ireland and the old shared campus will have to soldier on.

On a much more nimby note, I'm just annoyed the last thing they did do is knock down one of the walls along entrance to Moyglare Hall and leave temporary fencing out in the middle of the road. Now we'll be stuck with this ugly mess for a while, while everyone argues about bills, security and responsibility

Its the joint partner of carrilion that are putting it out to tender. Very very very messy situation and very difficult for gov to do anything rash as there would be huge penalties.

Hopefully there will be some system whereby contractors will get a good portion of what is owed.

This isn't a PPP - it was a direct build contract to Sammon not connected to the Carillion PPP bundle. Carillion is why Sammon have gone under but this will be retendered conventionally

Not a huge amount of tightening up that can be done to the tender timeframe both with normal EU tendering rules, and KWETB under investigation for potential procurement fraud.

However, the award to commencement is ridiculously long particularly with the heavy groundworks all complete - they can work over winter.
