    Hopefully it's Rosenborg.

I wouldn't mind Dinamo Zagreb or Crvena Zvedza. Both teams with a good European history. Not saying we'd beat either of them, mind.

Well it will surely be Rosenborg, draw has been made.

City v Celtic or Rosenborg, so most likely Rosenborg. Home first on Thursday the 9th of August, away the following week. In that group of teams, a middle of the road draw. Not the hardest quality-wise and one of the shorter trips. Avoided having to travel across the continent, at least. Rosenborg scraped past Valur of Iceland, with a dodgy penalty in the last few minutes.

Provided they lose, that's us playing the team Dundalk played last year and Dundalk playing the teams we played!

Meanwhile, if Dundalk beat Larnaca in the 2nd round, they'll be play one of the five teams in bold. Two of them - Zenit and Maccabi - were sides they played in the 2016 Europa League group stage.

1 Ajax (NED) v Sturm Graz (AUT) (losers from CLQR2 non-champions path)
2 Maccabi Tel-Aviv (ISR) v Radnicki Niš (SRB)
    3 HNK Rijeka (CRO)
4 Aberdeen (SCO) v Burnley (ENG)
    5 Zenit (RUS)
6 Tobol Kostanay (KAZ) v Pyunik (ARM)
7 Dunajská Streda (SVK) v Dinamo Minsk (BLR)
8 St. Gallen (SUI) v Sarpsborg (NOR)
    9 Dundalk (IRL) v AEK Larnaca(CYP)
    10 İstanbul Başakşehir (TUR)

Probably worst draw they could get

Very tough draw. Celtic would beat them easy and Rosenborg will be in season and are a strong team. Dundalk matched them for a game an a half last year but you could see the difference in class and Rosenborg seemed to have another couple of gears in them when they needed them.

    Yeah, I just heard.

    Bring on the Rosenborg!

Rosenborg have lost players since last season & barely got through against the Iceland champions. Needed a 93rd min goal in 2nd leg.

There manager has been sacked as well.

    Cork have a chance imo.

They don't have that Serbian guy that played well against Dundalk anymore but I think they're pretty much the same team bar his loss.

    Ajax (NED)/Sturm Graz (AUT) V Dundalk (IRL)/AEK Larnaca(CYP)

    That's quite the carrot.

More than likely will be a trip to Austria if Dundalk win. Tough ask obviously but the third round draw was always gonna be a toughie. Graz runners up in the Austrian league last season and narrowly beaten by Fenerbahce in Europa League qualifiying rounds last year. First things first though. Lets beat the Cypriots!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,255 ✭✭✭joeysoap

PUC :) if it’s Celtic , they’re Irish after all.

Demonstrates how the same teams are qualifying (not always the in same competition ie Dundalk to Levadia and Larnaka this year- City got both last year.

City got Legia and probably Rosenberg - Dundalk got one last year and one in 2016.

Rosenborg beat Ajax last season in Europa League so Ajax wont be as strong as anyone thought.

Anyone know if Dundalk would be home or away for the first leg?

Dundalk would be travelling for the first leg should they progress to the next round. (Thursday August 9th)

So Dundalk or Cork could have a fair idea of opponents after Wednesdays match. Does match have to get moved from Oriel if Dundalk go through?

Yeah needs to be a category 3. That is a 4500 seater minimum

    b. category 3 for the third qualifying round and play-offs;

If they were to squeeze another 515 seats in somehow would it qualify for a cat 4 and allow group stages at home should they get there. Do you need to be cat 4 for groups?

Yes, the requirements jump significantly for group stages including VIP parking, TV gantries and access points, media facilities (desks with power points etc) and a host of other improvements.

As far as I know you'd need a minimum of 150 cones or something like that !! :D

Rosenborg 1-1 at ht, they couldn't could they.

    Edit, nope 3-1

Dundalk 0-0 AEK Larnaca at half-time. Dundalk have just shaded it but very even game.

Larnaca have 6 Spaniards starting and only 1 Cypriot. Money must be good out there.

Stephen Bradley without the beard managing the Cypriots?

Gonna be tough out there with the heat v a decent team.

Need an early goal.. good luck de Town.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,468 ✭✭✭White Horse

Even enough game, I thought we just shaded the number of chances but a draw is a fair result.

The balance of our midfield just wasn't right, Benson was pushing too far forward and leaving oceans of space for them to exploit. Chris Shields had to play like two players to hold the midfield. A stunning performance from him.

McEleney coming off the bench was almost a game changer, they couldn't handle his movement and inventiveness. Its a pity he is not fit enough to play more than 30 minutes.

Overall I'm pretty happy to go to Cyprus knowing a score draw will put us through.

The ref though. An absolute shocking performance.

Shows how far our top teams have progressed when I say that I expected more from Dundalk in a European tie! Decent game but the lack of a goal or two is a killer.

On a positive note Eir are showing the away leg next week. Early KO.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,255 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Good luck to Dundalk today. 37 degrees, that’s way beyond what we’re used to.

    C’mon the town.

Are you mad? Well used to the heat in Dundalk. Feckin roastin :)

Was it Cork a couple of years ago that faced a Cypriot side and everyone was surprised by how good they were after thinking it wasn't a bad draw to get.

They were beaten last season by the same team, they controlled the game very well.

    No chance of penalties now

    Very poor defending by Dundalk.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,255 ✭✭✭joeysoap

Back to the league of Ireland target now. €500k wasn’t a bad result. Seeded but drew a short straw in Larnaca. Whole new team, mostly Spanish ex La Liga, new Spanish manager. Pity, I wouldn’t have minded seeing them against Ajax.

Usual little margins. Well, fairly big one there tbh, clear penalty not given.

    Dundalk have been awful.

Poor year for the LOI clubs.

Easy to say now but I think the team that started the 2nd half should have been the starting line up. Easily our worst European display under Kenny. They're just faster than us all over the park.

    McEleney has to start.

Looked very sharp in last few appearances.

Long term Dundalk need a replacement for O'Donnell. But that is a very difficult player to replace.

You'd be surprised how quickly that prize money can be eaten into. City made €440k from the Europa League last season, against the same opponents. Not a whole lot was left over after the away leg costs. I think the team had to fly commercially for the Larnaca match, because the cost to run a charter was prohibitively expensive (if the option was even there from Cork).

Dublin Airport offers better options, no doubt, and possibly a bit cheaper due to competition, so maybe Dundalk are saving a bit more than we did. They're also getting an extra €60k in prize money than we did. But if you get a bad draw travel-wise, the costs really rack up.
