Premier League TV rights: Amazon to show 20 matches a season from 2019-2022 https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/44396151 Amazon will show 20 Premier League matches a season for three years from 2019, after winning one of the final two broadcast packages. The online streaming service has won the rights to show one round of midweek games and one round from a bank holiday. The matches will be available to Amazon Prime's UK members. The other unsold package of 20 matches was bought by BT Sport for £90m, taking their total to 52 games. More to follow.

Sky have lost the 3pm games in Ireland to Premier Sports, while the Amazon rights will be on Irish TV so that is 3 suppliers needed for Ireland like the UK

Premier Sports can eff right off. This fragmentation of rights is great for competition among companies, but absolutely terrible for consumers as usual.

Amazon can eff right off too.

The only people who benefit are the clubs, 3 different companies paying to show the games. There is 200 games live or something like that all 3 should have access to all the live games leaving it up to the person to choose who they go with to watch it

The EU thought it was a good thing to break up Sky's monopoly but all its meant for the consumer is multiple subscriptions to different providers and higher costs.

Is Premier Sports part of the EIR channels here?

That is what i thought Eir Sports in Ireland is what Premier Sports is in N.Ireland

That's what I thought Eir 1 was Premier Sports just rebranded here.

Premier Sports also have the rights to the Amazon games here in Ireland.

Reading the Irish Times article I get the impression that Premier Sports have bought them to sell them on to digital tv providers. Its the quickest way for them to make their money back rather than selling individual subs

Of course they should, that would be proper competition, but there would be far less benefit for the companies in bidding large amounts in that case as most fans will go with whoever the cheapest is, and then you get essentially price fixing or a race to the bottom in terms of price, which for consumers is good, but for companies and clubs would be bad.

In an ideal world there would be one paid subscription where for 300 quid, or whatever, you get access to all games on a variety of platforms, with 1 game per week on a free to air channel. The UK prohibition for 2.45 - 5.15 on a Saturday puts paid to that though straight off. We shouldn't be subject to the packages of the UK market, but aside from a sop of 1 game per week, we are as our market is just too small. It is really annoying though that there isn't a full package of all games available to the Irish market legally, where the UK Saturday afternoon restriction doesn't apply.

Is that not the case for most of the EU countries they can only show 1 3pm game live all others as live

I thought it was only a UK specific one. In Spain for example, El Classico has been on at 3pm in recent years. UK TV can't show live games from other countries at this time, which is what you might be thinking of?

The bank holiday that Amazon have exclusive live rights for is for the St Stephen's Day fixtures.

Ya, theres been a few Clasicos on at 3pm or 3.15 and Sky have had full delayed coverage, which is utterly pointless in this day.

Ad in La Liga as another sub going forward if you want to watch Spanish football.

Sky, BT, Premier Sports & La Liga streaming.

A new model for sports broadcasting is needed. Do away with channels, specifically. Pick and choose what leagues/events you want on a avariety of media delivery devices.

PL Coverage - All games for 200 per season
CL Coverage - All Games for 150 per season
Cricket World Cup - 100 for all games
    PDC Darts - 50
    Rugby Champions Cup - 100
    Masters Golf - 20
    etc, etc

Get all of them for 750 or something comparable to the costs of subscribing to Sky and BT now.

If premier sports is EIR, doesn't the BT package come with the eir channels so only 2 packages needed then?

The way The Times has it written Premier Sports and Eir no longer have a partnership and Premier Sports bought the rights to set up itself.

The reason the packages were all broken up in the first place was supposedly as a directive to protect the paying punter........who now has to take out 16 different subscriptions instead of just the one to watch all the games

As others have said I hope this falls on its arse and completely bombs, absolute joke.

The one thing I would say about this move to a streaming platform is I that think it moves us one step closer to the day where you can buy an online pass to watch every single game of the club you support each season.

So we are left with this live Premier League Set-up in Ireland from 2019/20 to 2021/22.

Sky Sports (128 matches per season)

    Package B - 32 matches at Saturday 17:30
Package C - 24 matches at Sunday 14:00 and eight matches at Saturday 19:45
    Package D - 32 matches at Sunday 16:30
Package E - 24 matches at Monday 20:00 or Friday 19:30–20:00 and eight matches at Sunday 14:00

BT Sport (52 matches per season)

    Package A - 32 matches at Saturday 12:30
Package G - 15 matches from two midweek fixture programmes and five matches from the split weekend

Premier Sports - (53 matches per season)

    Package F - 33 Saturday 15:00
Package F* - 20 Games (split between St. Stephen's Day and one midweek fixture programme)

    * Amazon Prime in UK

If Premier and Eir end ties its a disaster for us :(

On the one hand back in the day the live football season started in late October and you got maybe 5 games before Christmas but it was free. Now you get hundreds of games and get to pay a fortune to watch Stoke v Swansea.

20 games on St Stephens Day?

  • Registered Users Posts: 711 ✭✭✭rodders999

20 games on St Stephens Day?

Kind of impossible unless every team plays twice!

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,061 ✭✭✭irishfeen

20 games on St Stephens Day?

Split evenly between St Stephens Day and 1 midweek round..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,329 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Amazon have 10 mid week games in December and the Stephens Day round of games so that is where the 20 games are coming from, they can show every game on those rounds

It's kind of misleading though as most will be on at same time. Would be better if they had the 20 games spread out over the season

Amazon/Premier Sports Package F could look something along these lines-

    Midweek Round
    5 matches on Tuesday
    5 matches on Wednesday

    St Stephen's Day
    2 matches at 12.30pm
    3 matches at 3pm
    3 matches at 5.30pm
    2 matches at 8pm

Would be better but that is the package they signed up for.

Also for Stephens day they could space the games out

When the next set of rights go up for grabs Disney will more than likely own Sky.

I would wonder will they be prepared to pump crazy money into buying the rights.

I have a feeling they will get even more splintered.

Keep fragmenting the market, encourage streaming.

True ,that would give a bit of a spread but its essentially still only 3 days with matches on out of the whole season ,which will be like a fly on an elephants back for competing with Sky.

amazon wouldn't give a crap about sky. a good test package for them which will have people signed up to prime at xmas also. maybe throw in customer specific ads, etc. too

I want to watch football legally but i want it convenient and reasonable. This is the exact opposite so i will pay my nominal monthly illegal stream fee and watch any game i want.
This just encoruages people to stream illegally.
