Oh I've never heard of that either. I'm just hoping the vetting isn't too long even though I'm prepared for it to be. Hopefully yours is only basic and will fly through.

Hi folks,
I have been offered a post with the Dept of Defence in Kildare and have a couple of questions maybe somebody could help with.
What realistically are the prospects for promotion to EO say within a year or two, do opportunities come up to apply often?
The info at the start of this campaign mentions a 43 hour week, is this correct?
Taking the post would mean a sizeable pay drop, I am in my early forties and want to leave my current area of employment which i have been doing for a good number of years, to a role which is less physically demanding and hopefully be able to claw back the salary drop with promotion.Has anyone else took the same leap and how did fare out thus far?
Any info or opinion would be great,thanks

Civil Service promotions happen in three ways; Open, Interdepartmental, Internal. An Open competition can be entered by anyone and they usually happen every two years. The last one for Dublin was 2018 and regionally was 2019. Interdepartmental (where you can get placed anywhere in the Civil Service) and Internal (where you would remain in your department) can't be applied for until you're in two years.


The short answer to your question is it's very possible to get promoted in a few months but it all depends on when the Open competitions fall. Longer term it'll depend on when the InterD and Internal competitions fall.

That's inclusive of breaks. The standard Civil Service working day is 7 hours and 24 minutes. If you're on flexi-time your days can be considerably shorter than people who have to take the long breaks but it's not available to everyone.

The work/life balance in the Civil Service - especially where flexi-time is available, is probably the best out there. I have just enough work to stretch me and develop me but not so much that I'm stressing about anything. The only issue as a CO and even an EO tbh is the work can be quite repetitive and boring. As for money bear in mind you're on a scale and will skip points 4 and 8.

It's for new entrants. I can't remember how new of a new entrant you have to be. It was some pay restoration compromise thinggy to do with the longer scales for new entrants.

I Have received an email from PAS today stating that I have been assigned to AGS, all vetting has been completed and gave them my current employer as a reference.
The email states that I will be contacted by AGS HR department in relation to assignment date, anybody have any idea how long this usually takes?

Have two colleagues dealing with AGS hr at the minute and it’s an absolute nightmare.

One has been waiting over 20 weeks for security clearance.

The other was assigned a position and told them they’d take it as long as their service carried over. Provided the required paperwork from our hr and never heard back until they got a call on their start date asking where they were. She explained that she’d never heard back and they asked for the paperwork again. She sent it off and hasn’t heard a word from them since. This is probably going on about two months at this stage.

Hi! It was only a few days in my case. They called my reference a day after I sent them the information about my (then) current employer, and two more days, I got offered the position in a garda station

Yes. Tco competition comes out every year while CO is ever 2 years. After the competition is over you will have to reapply.

The CO and TCO panels are completely different. I was offered a CO job (2016 panel) while working as a TCO (2017 panel). And was lucky enough that the jobs dovetailed. I started working as a CO a few weeks after my TCO contract finished.

But if you aren't offered a CO position when the next CO competition opens, then yes, you will need to apply again. Similarly, if you are working as a TCO, you will need to apply again for the next panel.

Yeah, and tbf it’s a specialist eo level position that requires security clearance rather than just vetting, where she had to provide details for extended family members. Someone on here mentioned that pas are aware of the delay with this but can’t do anything about it.

I think the reason she’s frustrated is partially the lack of communication but also worrying that the panel will close before her vetting comes back.

When yoi say jobs offered to later batches do you mean that people behind you in the CO comp got placements? The CO and TCO panels are completely seperate. So even if your in a TCO post and your Oom is reached on CO panel you should be offered post.
If people after you on CO panel got ofers and you didnt you need to ring PAS because something went wrong.
If thsts not what you meant and your Oom isn't reached befpre panel closes then you'll have to go back thro the whole application again. Irrespective of getting in as TCO
