Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

With most of their population over at the world cup isn't it about time we annex it as the 29th county of the free state.
We rising house prices we could do with some lebensraum.

    I'd rather annex Germany.

That will provide us with a far greater chance of qualifying for the world cup

I'm going in September, sure that makes me practically one of the natives.

Fierce proud of Holmur and the lads out there at the moment. Win, lose or draw against Argentina, it's a great day for the parish.

What if we just got all our rubbish and dumped it in Waterford for the next twenty years. Then threw a few foot of topsoil over it and built a landmass connecting to uk but with a hard border.
And then a soft border in the north.

Then Leo Varadkar could pretend he personally is building houses on it. But he won’t he will just use it to fudge the house building stats.

Not as cold as places like Sweden and Norway. Because they are right beside the Atlantic Ocean, they get a lot of changeable weather systems and strong winds coming in. Reykjavik doesn't get much snow at all, not even in winter.

Haha you see Iceland is a bit odd with names.
The son at the end just means you are the name at the starts son. I can’t remember the ins and outs of it but gudmansson just means your dad was called gudman and you are a boy.

There are volcanos and are close to Greenland.

We take Iceland. Use it as a base of operations to take Greenland. Then the world!

Not so much. If I had a son they would be called jimmy conservatorysson if I had a daughter her name would be Jane conservatorydottir or something like that. Then their kids would be called John jimmysson and if Jane married a lad called John and had a daughter her name would be Mary johnsdottir.

My spelling may be off but you get the jist

Yep. And they don't keep the surnames. Your son's surname would actually be Captmidnightsson.

Yes back in the day that was the Irish way. Sean McNeil was son of Neil. O’brian was grandson of Brian. So Sean would be Seán McNeil O’Brien

Sometimes you still get that in Kerry, but the mc is elided. Sean ‘Neil O’Brien.

(This is for a guy whose father is famous and called Neil/Niall).

Except in Kerry this died out in the early 11th C when the descendents of Brian Boru always wanted to be O’Brien.

According to my geography teacher, the first people to discover Iceland were Irish monks. So we clearly have a historic claim to this territory by right of first discovery. But what if this strategy backfires and the Icelandic folk take to GAA?

    We might have a problem.

Given the budgetry constraints I think our naval service could be regarded as not being able to match the capabilities of the Royal Navy next door.

Today's Royal Navy has six destroyers and thirteen frigates.

That's less ships than they used for the Cod Wars against Iceland when they were at full Cold War strength.

    And they lost.

    Three times.

If memory serves though that was much more so because of political clout than because of naval prowess?

I'd say if we were to decide to annex Iceland we'd need to be more worried about repercussions from the US than anything else.

Perhaps if we could keep them in their box if we threatened to take away acess to Shannon :pac:

    We might have a problem.

Good news: Our defence forces are about 20-1 larger than that of Iceland in terms of personnel and budget.

But, they are in some organisation called NATO, and we are not...
