How would you rate the complexity of running a passenger airline business?

    It's very complex obviously ,so many variables


    How would you rank it against other businesses in terms of complexity?

    What other businesses are comparable

    Running a (marine) shipping line; complex vehicles, highly variable staff technical requirements, multiple rosters, affected by weather/bureaucracy/political control/fuel costs/manpower issues/acts of God and a million other variables.

    I was thinking about this at the time Ryanair had the pilot shortage

    It made my head hurt thinking how complicated the whole business was with the added problems .

    Some major engineering or construction projects seem comparable over the short term although they wouldn't be a business.

    With a lot of building projects, each project is a one-time deal with it's own challenges and it changes as you move on to the next one and the people you have to deal with changes and the local circumstances change. With an airline, you can be dealing with lifers and newbies, old routes and new routes, aircraft problems, so in one sense, airlines can be static in terms of employees, familiar locations, familiar equipment, same hangars and offices and yet they can be dynamic; new Boss, new aircraft, changes of location,etc.
    There is a point in organisations where they effectively run themselves, regardless of whose name is on the Boss's door and the whole place runs seamlessly enough and airlines get like that very quickly, because (my opinion) they have a fairly rigidly defined task, moving people from A to B and back again, in aircraft and they have the tools at hand to do it and the imperative is to make money from that task. In effect, all they have to do is figure out how to do it well and keep doing it. An airline doesn't have to worry about making cars people don't want or making the wrong clothes nor is it dependent on, like a shipyard, orders for ships. It just has to be as efficient as possible.
