So even a few years ago there were plenty of codes on the net to get the latest version of Word or Excel on your laptop but now the security must have been ramped up completely as none of them are working. Is the time now to either pay for it or forget about it?

Maybe time to use a different office suite, such as Libre Office. ;)

MIMO, France's inter-ministerial working group on free software, runs LibreOffice on almost 500,000 PCs. The software is used in many departments including energy, defence, agriculture and education.

The administration of the Spanish autonomous region of Valencia has installed LibreOffice on 120,000 PCs. This has provided the administration with IT vendor independence and reduced expenditure on proprietary software licenses.

Italy's Ministry of Defence is transitioning to LibreOffice and the Open Document Format (ODF) on over 100,000 computers. The Ministry is developing online courses to help with the switch to LibreOffice.

Taiwan's Ministry of Finance has installed LibreOffice on over 24,000 PCs, with the standardised Open Document Format becoming the norm for exchanging data in the various departments.

+1 for libreoffice. Is also compatible with MS Office suite (can save files as docx and xlsx).

Libre office is ****e to be fair. It's like MS office 2003.

Office isn't as expensive as it used to be thankfully.

Microsoft Office is not free. I am closing this as discussion of piracy is not allowed. As others have suggested, LibreOffice is good and legally free. Alternatively Office subscription costs are not as expensive as they were in the past.
