Safety issue, front wheel mudguard

    Some years ago while cycling in hot weather on an exposed road (R400), the tarred surface was melting and tar and chippings were coming loose.
    Some debris collected between the tyre and mudguard of the front wheel of the bike, causing the mudguard to shatter, but the mudguard stays remained intact and bent up causing the front wheel to jam almost instantly, see attached sketches.
    As my speed was low, the locked wheel skidded resulting in a non-serious fall.

    This type of failure is being considered in the investigation into the death of a cyclist in the UK. The attached link is copied from the CTC website;

    I fitted a replacement mudguard from SKS, fitted with 'secu clips' which are designed to avoid this type of failure. Those clips and similar units from other manufactures are available seperately from various suppliers locally and on-line and are usually fitted as standard on most hybrid bikes.
    However, they do not appear to be standard on smaller wheels, say 16in and 20in found on folding bikes.
    If you have one of those bikes it is important to check that the front wheel mudguard is secure and that the clearance between in and the tyre is maintained
