API Gateway Authentication and Authorization

Hi, I have created an API using API Gateway on AWS. I am looking to secure it with authentication and authorization but I can't make any sense of the documentation on AWS, can anyone point in the right direction of what to way to do this. Do I use IAM roles and policies or Cognito ?
