Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Hope to travel from Berlin, Germany to Amsterdam via train, over the Summer

I wish to stop in Hanover/Essen or anywhere else along the route that you might recommend.

Can anyone recommend the cheapest/most efficient way to do this if travelling by train?

the cheapest and quickest way may be just to get a budget flight one way. With bags though that suddenly gets dear, and you have to add on the cost of getting to and from airports when comparing prices.

Essen is a place with steel mills, and they make tanks and other stuff, but not really a tourist stronghold.
Downtown hannover is fairly non descript too.
If I were doing it by land I'd consider going via cologne, possibly building in a stop of a few hours there. The cathedral is nice, youre by the Rhine, theres a nice beerhall right on the cathedral square right by the station. It couldnt be handier.

You can get 2x single tickets for the 2 portions of the journey, or on bahn.com specify a stop in Cologne for a certain period of time. Its random which way of doing it is cheaper so you just need to mess about.
Traveling very early or very late can often give the best prices.

Isn't much in the middle of Germany really

Berlin to Koln direct, Koln is worth a look, the beer hall is Fruh Am Dom, which is a unique experience when it comes to beer delivery
25 minutes further on is Dusseldorf despite its reputation as a drinking location is actually a really nice place and the train to Amsterdam stops there

When buying a ticket you can specify a layover time at one or more places so you can buy one ticket, have two stops all in a single transaction which might work out a lot cheaper

Always take a train over plane anyday me.

If stopping in Hannover you should check out the herrenhausen garten

Might be oppressive heat etc in high summer, might be info advice online

Otherwise Hannover doesn't stick out for me as somewhere I've been.

Essen is nice, but pretty quiet for nightlife / party, unless there's an event on.

Dusseldorf the nightlife is hopping almost every night of the week in the Altstadt, lots of stuff to choose from:

Cologne is a great spot too, with many beer halls and events.

If you fancy it you can sign up for the Electric Scooters for free before arriving and nip around dusseldorf:

Or for 5 euro get 90 minutes of driving around Dusseldorf/Cologne:

Grab a BMW 1 Series Cabrio / Mini Cabrio and get some sunshine

You can also get a day ticket for the whole NRW Region for 30.50 euros so explore the region at your leisure.

French food festival is this weekend (Great food and parties all over the place)

Starting 13th of August the Gourmet food festival is on:

Benrather Bierborse is on 17 - 19th of August: (Great beer festival with a fantastic selection of beers, I think it's around 1km long)

I could think of a ton of stuff to do, too much to list :D

In the NRW Region the Gasometer in Oberhausen, the Zollverein in Essen is interesting (Also the red dot design museum there is in my opinion the most interesting one I've been to in a while)

If you are into cars then checkout classic remise:

I believe there is one in Berlin also :)

For going between Berlin and Amsterdam I would recommend the ICE, sure you can fly in any country but you can only take the iconic ICE in Germany :)

I used to visit Essen regularly in the 90s and it was kicking, but only if you have a good local and connected guide as much was underground type stuff.

Cologne and Dusseldorf would be my go to for this type of stop off.
