Just because they’ve played for Ulster doesn’t mean they’re better, ulster give all their academy players game time, doesn’t mean they should automatically start on the u20s, there may be better prospects in different provinces, just because they played for Ulster, doesn’t automatically make them guaranteed starters, but I could be wrong, just my opinion

Should there be?
Kernahan if released should play but mightnt as Ulster might keep him for pro14 during the 6 nations.

Ulster do give their academy players game time earlier than some of the other provinces but playing professional regardless of where does indicate theyre further down line in many ways and should be starting for 20s

Not always the case that they should be starting 20s, remember Hugh O’Sullivan and Jonny Stewart last year, O’Sullivan ended up starting ahead of him, not taking anything away from the ulster players, they are good, but I don’t think playing for Ulster automatically indicates that they’re better than someone else from a different province

Looking back that 23 was absolutely stacked. James Ryan and Stockdale have developed into superstars at international level. Porter is an excellent backup to Tadhg Furlong. The majority of the 23 have gone to at least become squad members amongst the provinces.

Heard Trinity could of won by more, keeps them in touch with Clontarf. 'Tarf were meant to be sub par vs Barnhall and Barnhall should of won. Heard Lansdowne were losing with 10mins to go but ran in several tries in last few minutes. Terenure were meant to be much better side vs UCD.

Good to see league so competitive this year, there's upsets most weeks at top and bottom of the table.

yes they are but are 2 and almost 3 years overage(in conor's case) for under 20s this year

Tbf, I don't think he was necessarily the clear cut choice to start. Byrne has experience at this level which goes a long way, and Moore for me would have been the starting 12 if fit. I think with the amount of flyhalfs in the squad Hawkshaw is likely to be playing 12, and Flannery is likely to be getting on at 15.

Caolan Englefield very unlucky in picking up a shoulder injury that meant surgery and being sidelined for the rest of the season. Was almost guaranteed to make the squad, and most likely start. Played England u16, Ireland u18 and Ireland u19. Final year of eligibility.

don't think Englefield was guaranteed to make the squad at all, as an exile he got several chances, but he never struck me as a top prospect.

Milne will be the early favourite to be first choice at this position after struggling to re-adjust to tighthead post celtic cup. Wycherley was a late addition to the Munster academy and while not the carrier than Milne is, he shouldn't be much of a downgrade in quality around the field. Coyne will hope to take his chance if given it, had been dominant for Trinity 20's early in the season and not starts regularly for their 1sts in the AIL.

Tighthead Prop
Thomas Clarkson(Blackrock/DUFC) - u19
Ryan Lomas(Roscrea/Galwegians)
Luke Masters(CBC Cork/Shannon)

Clarkson will be the early favourite for the England game here, despite being eligible again next season. Who will be his primary backup is interesting, Lomas is probably the best bet although his disciplinary record isn't very good, Masters has missed most of the season with an injury but was highly rated at u18 and u19 level.

Dylan Tierney(Corinthians)
Billy Scannell(PBC/Young Munster)
John McKee(Campbell/Old Belvedere) - u19

Tierney was capped last season so will likely start the first game, the converted backrow will hope to hold off Scannell, who is highly rated. McKee captained Ireland u19 in the season and will likely have to wait his turn for a chance in the 6 nations.

As an exile,not involved with a province, it may well be harder to impress the coaches and selectors. Englefield may well have been selected, but doubt he would have been a starter as Casey is vice captain

Charlie Ryan returns from last years squad where he got 5 caps, all off the bench, he is the most physically imposing of the locks named in teh squad and looks very likely to be 1st choice TH lock. Past that Ryan Baird and Niall Murray are both superb athletes for the position, with Murray lining up at 6 during warmup games over Christmas. JJ McKee looks most likely to backup Ryan at TH lock and has emerged this season after not featuring in Ireland squads at a younger age. Two locks who will be eligible again next season are named in the squad, Paddy Kelly is a physically imposing lock who could surprise at TH lock if given a chance, while Brian Deeny fits more in the athletic lock mold, with previous experience at 7's rugby and in the backrow.

Scott Penny has surprised everyone this season with 3 senior starts for Leinster and if released will be the likely starting openside for the 20's. Below him John Hodnett and Martin Moloney looks the most likely players to play 7 for the 20's. Although both have experience at other positions, Hodnett at 8 and Moloney at 6. Azur Allison would be starting 8 if he could stay healthy, but he has been unable to do so this season, he is already confirmed to be missing the england game. Ronan Watters looks to be his obvious replacement at 8 or the previously mentioned Hodnett. David McCann could be an option at 8, but I think it more likely he plays 6 at this stage, although he is likely behind Niall Murray and others at the position.
