    ped at this level

    Unavailable due to injury
Harry Byrne, Brian Deeny, David Hawkshaw, Martin Moloney, Scott Penny, Conor Phillips

That's some list of players out injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,353 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Missing our best 10, 12 (who was also captain) and best player in Penney.

The squad did brilliantly to absorb the injuries to Byrne and Hawkshaw midway through the 6 Nations campaign. Might be a step too far now though. But they're very well coached so they'll make a proper go of the World Championship despite missing a lot of talent.

Does anyone know much about Cormac Izuchukwu?..He was drafted into the Irish 7s this week.. Roscrea I think.. He's under age this year and next.. A 6'7 centre who has the gas to play 7s is usually pretty handy to have about.

Plays second row and centre, didn’t get feature in sct until in 6th year and wasn’t great, also not playing AIL this year so I’d say 7s will be the place for him

He was playing second tier in Scotland I think, wonder would it be the equivalent of AIL 2A or B.

    Is Penny overage now?

    Is Penny overage now?
    No. injured.

Not very confident about our prospects! The injury bug strikes again. Hawkshaw and Byrne are massive losses, but Maloney and Penny could be the straw that breaks our hearts.

    Squad breakdown

    LH Prop
    Josh Wycherley(Bantry Bay RFC-CC Roscrea/Young Munster) - 5 caps
    Michael Milne(Birr RFC-CC Roscrea/UCD) - 3 caps

Wycherley started and played the majority of every game during the under-20 6 nations, Milne who is a destructive carrier had the sub appearances before injury ended his 6 nations early.

    TH Prop
    Tom Clarkson(Blackrock College/DUFC) - under 19, 5 caps.
    Charlie Ward(Tullow RFC/Clontarf) - under 19, uncapped.

Clarkson started and played the majority of every game during the under-20 6 nations, Ward was injured during the 6 nations and has somewhat surprisingly made this squad ahead of older options who were in the squad during the 6 nations - Lomas, Masters.

    Hooker
    Dylan Tierney Martin(Corinthians RFC) - 6 caps.
    John McKee(Campbell College/Old Belvedere) - under-19, 4 caps.
    Declan Adamson(Clontarf RFC) - uncapped.

Martin started and played the majority of every game during the under-20 6 nations, McKee was the primary backup during the 6 nations and will return next season. Adamson somewhat surprisingly made the squad ahead of Billy Scannell given Scannell was ahead of him during the 6 nations but a strong AIL season for Adamson has been rewarded.

    Lock
    Charlie Ryan(Blackrock College/UCD) - 9 caps.
    Ryan Baird(St. Michaels College/DUFC) - 2 caps.
    Niall Murray(Buccaneers RFC) - 5 caps.
    Tom Ahern(Dungarvan RFC/Shannon) - under-19, uncapped.

Ryan returns from last season and will captain the side at the World cup, no relation to the older Ryan who recently captained Ireland u20, Charlie is a workhorse tighthead lock who started all 5 games during the 6 nations. Baird who missed the first three games due to injury, is a potential difference maker for ireland this world cup, recently made his debut for leinster in the pro 14. Murray who started all 5 game during the 6 nations is very athletic and could lineup at blindside. Ahern who makes the squad due to injury, will be back next season is a super athlete for the position.

    Backrow
    John Hodnett(Clonakilty RFC/UCC) - 5 caps.
    Azur Allison(Ballymena Academy/Ballymena) - uncapped.
    Ronan Watters(St. Marys College/St. Marys) - 1 cap.
    David McCann(RBAI/Banbridge) - under-19, 3 caps.
    Ciaran Booth(Sale Sharks) - under-19, uncapped.

Hodnett who started all 5 games during the 6 nations at 8, will likely feature heavily at 7 during the world cup. Has been compared to SOB due to size and style of play. Allison missed the 6 nations due to injury, will likely feature heavily at 8 during this tournament, is somewhat similar to Max Deegan is style of play. Watters is a versatile backrow who has experience at all three backrow positions. McCann who will be back next season, is a massively physical player who cover 6 and 8. Booth who was a late inclusion due to injury covers 6 and 7.

    Scrumhalf
    Craig Casey(Ardscoil Ris/Shannon) - 4 caps.
    Cormac Foley(St. Gerards College/St.Marys) - 4 caps.
    Colm Reilly(Buccaneers RFC) - 2 caps.

The diminutive Casey was a star during the 6 nations and will need to be the same during the world cup. Foley was the primary backup during the 6 nations during his 1st season playing 9 full time. Reilly scored the winning try for the grand slam. Somewhat surprising ireland are being 3 scrumhalves, Foley does have experience of playing 10 and 12 so might be needed there in case of emergency.

    Outhalf
    Ben Healy(Glenstal Abbey/Garryowen) - 2 caps
    Jake Flannery(Rockwell College/Shannon) - 5 caps

Healy who started the 3 games that Harry Byrne missed during the 6 nations will likely start the 1st game, while Flannery who was primarily starting fullback during the 6 nations until he replaced Healy against Wales to win the game looks likely to be the backup. Don't rule out this changing as the world cup goes on.

    Outside Backs
    Sean French(PBC/Cork Con) - 3 caps.
    Stewart Moore(Ballymena/Malone) - uncapped.
    Liam Turner(Blackrock/DUFC) - 5 caps.
    Rob Russell(St.Michaels/DUFC) - 5 caps.
    Jonathan Wren(PBC/Cork Con) - 5 caps.
    Iwan Hughes(Exile/Ballynahinch) - uncapped.
    Angus Kernohan(Ballymena/Queens) - 6 caps.

Wren(11) & Turner(13) started all 5 games during the 6 nations, Turner has experience of playing on the wing also while Wren could also feature at 15. Russell covers the back three and did so from the bench during the 6 nations. Kernohan has a lot experience at pro 14 level on the wing but could also lineup at centre. French who is a star in attack could played any position from 12 out, his defence was tested during the 6 nations and he will need to show improvement there if he lines up at centre. Hughes was a unused sub during the wales game and covers the back three. Finally Moore, missed the 6 nations due to concussion and has the potential to be a star performer at 12 or 13.

    Likely 1st XV

    1. Josh Wycherley
    2. Dylan Tierney Martin
    3. Tom Clarkson
    4. Ryan Baird
    5. Charlie Ryan
    6. Niall Murray
    7. John Hodnett
    8. Azur Allison
    9. Craig Casey
    10. Ben Healy
    11. Jonathan Wren
    12. Stewart Moore
    13. Liam Turner
    14. Sean French
    15. Jake Flannery

Yep injury cripples the squad again, really disappointing . - wouldnt expect them to beat England with that team, might give Australia a go but Australia just beat NZ

If you take away Harry Byrne and penny the replacements for each other position are as good if not better, Moore is every bit as good as hawkshaw and more of a threat with ball in hand, Allison is a good bit better than Molony, Baird although in the row will bring the carrying and physicality missed by penny and French is probably our best attacker.. although there’s a few missing if the starting 15 avoid injuries there’s no reason why we can’t do well, the English team we played in cork were a far more star studded team than what’s available in the world cup

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭kingofthekong

Molony is a different player to Allison, Molony was relenltess in defense and in the ruck for Ireland and a massive reason why they were succesful, also Penney is probabaly the best player in that pack of forewards,

But I hope you are right and I am wrong

    When is the team named?

I thought Jake Flannery was a back three player?

Edit: A quick Google tells me he's more of a 10.

I'm looking forward to seeing Moore and Allison and also to seeing Casey again. Based on the 6Ns he is far and away the best U20 scrum half I've seen from Ireland.

Anyone know if you can purchase eir sport for only online viewing via laptop in the UK without buying a box and broadband etc?

Anyone know if World Rugby are streaming the Ireland v England match tonight? Outside of Ireland so I can’t watch it on Eir.

Games will be streamed on YouTube by world rugby

Blank screen on Premier Sports 1 due to World U 20 Rugby Championship being shown live on Eir Sport 1. This is presumably blanked out on PS1 and Eir Sport 1 in N. Ireland because ITV hold UK rights yet ITV show no live coverage of U20 WC until next week due to French Open tennis. Also live coverage is available of this rugby via both Youtube and IRB website and there is no geoblocking.

Apparently only the final will be geoblocked in the UK. A shame that Premier Sports can't show the games that ITV aren't showing. Anyway YouTube it is.

Looking at the you0tube channel, it says not available in Ireland.

Geoblocking events like this is mental to me.

Not many people are going to take out an EirSport subscription to watch an underage rugby tournament.

This isn't looking good so far. Some fantastic hands for that try.

Some famous surnames in that English team. Who are the stand outs for Ireland at this level aside from Casey with Byrne and Penny out?

Jake Flannery from close range. Big block down for Charlie Ryan led to it

Have pissed away two decent chances in the 22 since the Flannery try.

Who was it that claimed the kick-off in the build up to that try?

Absolute balls that took even in senior test rugby never mind u20s.

Tierney-Martin, I've never seen a front row compete in an aerial contest.

He just won a penalty too. Is scrummaging and tackling all over the park. Having a stormer of a game so far.

Harsh yellow there Hinckley couldn’t of got any lower with Kernohan moving down as Hinckley was approaching, a lot of big decisions going our way

I'm not sure. There's only a split second before Kernohan starts kneeling to take the catch, and he hits him in the shoulder but rides up. If Kernohan is an inch or two higher from kneeling that's a perfect hit.
