Doris was injured for the six nations, but had an incredible game against south africa in the JWC. I'd forgotten about O'Sullivan tbh, is he injured? I remember thinking we would seem him sooner rather than later for Munster, but I don't think he's been playing much for the A's.

I think his knee injury was one of those " you are out for a year ".

I've seen him play plenty of times against my mates and at AIL level this season. In school and Prem 1 last year, AIL this year.

The Leinster coaches clearly thought otherwise, ditto the Irish 20s coaches.

I am not saying he is bad, but Penney was Leinsters top try scorer (I think in that Celtic Cup) physically not at all out of place against other pros and Kearney is playing AIL. Not being destroyed or anything but nor is he cleaning up.

I also heard he may lose out to Pim and St Leger now that they are back.

Doubt it they will get ahead of him, we will wait and see https://amp.independent.ie/sport/rugby/leinster-rugby/max-kearney-at-school-and-with-leinster-agegrade-sides-is-the-best-player-i-have-played-with-he-puts-his-head-in-places-i-wouldnt-36895262.html

Not ahead of Ryan in the leinser sub-academy, not that I think Ryan is anything special.

Centre is weak at the moment in the underage section.
The dept in centre in this age group is shocking in comparison to recent years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,815 ✭✭✭D14Rugby

Give over, Penney has been involved with the Leinster Senior Squad out of school. Max Kearney wasn't destroying teams at Prem 1 last year or this year in AIL. He is good but he isn't in Penneys league for me, but would be inclined to go with the professional coaches view too.

He would also be a year older than Penney so that makes sense in school.

Kearney didn't play Prem 1 last year. Came in for the all Ireland’s at the end but rest of the time he was playing 1st XV

Incorrect- Trinitys back row for all of last year was Alex McDonald at 6/Tom Ryan at 8 and St Ledger at 7-that was the starting back row in the colours as well. Max Kearney played no more than 3./4 games for Trinity firsts last year-Fact

He didn't play more than 3/4 games for 20s either last year-Fact.

He was away with Leinster A, Ireland 20s or injured a lot. All he played for Trinity 20s was Fraser Mc Mullen cup

Ok, calm down now. He’s not even the best 7 belvo have had in the last 15 years. He was moved to 6 for a couple of matches in his final year in belvo as Conor Doran was seen to be better. He’s good but not as good as you’re making him out to be.

Keanrey started 7 on one of the best cup teams ever in 5th year and he also started as a 4th year, watch his cup campaign in 2016, especially the games against Blackrock and Michael’s and he also ran the pitch against Roscrea in the final, all I’m saying is that I haven’t seen a better backrow that has performed better at schools level than him, he was on a really good team which also helped I suppose

    Since 2002

Thats not very long. There have certainly been better 7’s in my lifetime Jennings being one. I think Kearney is a little undersized for the pro game although he did well at school.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,248 ✭✭✭kingofthekong

To be honest, I actually thought Max Kearney was better than Penny and probably still is, he always out played him when they played each other in school and always made dominant tackles against him, was a pitty they dropped him probably due to his height, thought he was a fantastic player and I thought Leinster made a mistake dropping him

lool He's not even close to the player Scott Penny is give over, couldnt be less close.

Penny's one of the most gifted backrows I've seen come through in a while

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 6 LostArt03

Kearney couldn't even get a cap for Ireland u20 last season.
Penny is about to make his debut for Leinster at 19 years old and before he has made his AIL or Ireland u20 debut.

Kearney was listed at 5'10, 91kg.. which is far too small at this level for an openside.

hes been playing out of his skin of late but to say one of the most gifted to have come through in a while would be a stretch. Think Doris or O'Sullivan are two off top of my head in recent years that look more gifted.

Doris and Penny are completley different players , on is a hooper mould and one is a Heaslip mould to compare them is difficult because they have different jobs on the pitch, hes the best 7 since Leavy at this level

Penny is quite small. Let's see how he gets on at full firsts level tonight before we start ordaining him. But I agree he looks promising.

For his position, he's probably the most physically developed/ready of his age group coming through. Was notable against France last year.

I see the u19's are playing Australia today, good to see a spread of players from all the provinces as well as a couple from the UK IQ system. Some decent prospects in the team, Aaron Sexton being the best

Highlights of th u19 game v Aus on the irfu site http://www.irishrugby.ie/news/43099.php#.XAzTkhbp2Ec

Watched the full game on the Aus rugby website. The Ausies were definitely more physical even though a year younger. Ire struggled in key positions to control the game. Not a great performance but there were a couple of standouts 7&13 both IQ, Kelly second row. 14 smith took his try well

Anthony Ryan, Ryan O'Neil, Thomas Clarkson, Tom Maher, Thomas Ahern, Max O'Reily, Paddy McKenzie all spring to mind off the top of my head. Then there are players who played for their provincial side who could well have played.

Munster need a big bruiser to come through at second row. Has he the size? Ahearn will be a good addition as well.

The Australian team are actually the same age as the Irish. It's their u18 team, but because their season falls differently, the players are eligible once born in 2000. That'll be their u19 team for the calendar year in 2019, same as Ireland.

Not according to the match report on their website

“Two tour matches against Irish provinces a year older than the Aussies, a win over Munster and loss to Ulster, clearly had them primed for the challenge of the U19 Irish side”.

If you look at the Ulster team posted on the previous page there were only two u19's starting, with two u17's and the rest u18's - so I can't really see how they would be a year older than the aussies.

Because all the Irish starting 15 bar 1 are u19 and the Aussies are u18 apparently, that’s how. I’ve no idea how the Aus age system works just stating their report on their official website.

  • Registered Users Posts: 285 ✭✭Number 137

It was an end of season tour for Australia. The Irish u19 squad is their u19 squad for the year ending 31st December 2019. This is Australia's u18 squad for the year ending 31st December 2018. So it will be their u19 side year ending 2019. Same as Ireland. The report saying they were facing a team a year older is based on the teams' titles, not their actual dates of birth.

Alex Shaw is usually quite knowledgeable with regards to English age grade prospects and he reckons Hayden is still u18 qualified.

Did anyone watch the full game (available on the aussies website)? Both teams looked quite poor at implementing any sort of game plan, there were lots of basic errors, and the overall quality wasn't great. Obviously we need to keep in mind that players were missing, teams were thrown together, and this was probably an exercise in getting game time for as many prospects as possible.

No. Neither generally would have had depth and probably allows stronger opposition for 20s to play
