Another Irish person unknown here but a big star abroad: Rea Garvey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rea_Garvey Kerryman who's big in Germany.

Which is the opposite of what this thread is about.

I think if he played for Liverpool on a weekly basis and scored the goal that got Ireland to the next world cup you'd call him the greatest Irishman ever.

    Tony Cascarino.

He is one of Talksport’s best known presenters, id say he is better known in the UK now than in Ireland

Sorry but this joke fails as it's "Packie Bonner"

Em, that kinda was the joke.

You see Packie sounds very similar to a common racial slur for Pakistanis. The joke works by suggesting that I thought the famous Irish goalkeeper, due to his unusual moniker, was in fact a Pakistani. In other words it's a hilarious comedy of errors.

Maybe jokes just aren't your thing murph!

That Auntie Poppy woman who used to read childrens stories on RTE in the 80's. Granted she was one of the Little Rascals but she's probably better known to a certain generation of Irish people than she is in the States.

Country duo The Bellamy Brothers (of "Let Your Love Flow" fame) were popular in Northern Ireland before their fame expanded.

English singer Tom Baxter had a massive hit here in 2007 with "Better", which peaked at #10 here but only #67 in the UK.

Jamie Lawson, of "I Wasn't Expecting That" fame, was massive here (#3) about four or five years before Ed Sheeran signed him. It wasn't until 2015 that IWET was a hit in the UK (#6).
