How to get to Lough Lumman?

I went to Lough Lumman maybe 15 years ago.

I don't recall the exact route.

I tried again recently, but think I took a wrong route.

Can anybody confirm whether or not this way is correct?

I turned left off the R284 Ballygawley road, just before Ballygawley, and headed east, past Lough Dargan, until I met the turn right for Kilross.

Just after that, less than 100m, I turned left into a lane.

It led north into Carrownagh townland. After maybe 1km of this lane, there was a Y, where I parked.

I took the lane to the left, which soon ended, beside a small house. The lane continued as a track into a Coillte forest.

On the left after a while there is a mobile telecom mast.

After that the track becomes overgrown, so I turned back.

    Is that the correct route?

    Thanks.

  • Also check out Section 6 on this Collooney to Slish Woods via Lough Lumman.

(Oddly enoughly from the Discover Bundoran website).

Description: This route begins with a woodland walk through
the leafy Union Woods. Follow a rambling forest track through
the Ballygawley Woods, and onwards up the slopes of Slieve
Daeane. The mountain route then leads onto rugged country
past the lonely Lough Lumman, followed by some rough tracks
which lead down to Slish Woods.
    • 54km – It’s worth making a detour here to Union Rock, a good
viewing point with commanding views in all directions.
    • 55km – Cross the main road and continue up a grassy route
which leads to forest tracks. The tracks ends and becomes
rougher, traversing mixed woodland. Pass under power lines at
58km and continue on the sometimes wet track.
    • 59km – The track winds through rocky cliffs and passes
through a ‘tunnel’ of gorse (stiff, evergreen shrubs) before
    reaching Lough Lumman.
    • 60km – The main track swings right and downhill towards
the forest. Take care to locate a left turn (the junction is not
obvious) and continue along a less definite path.
    • 61km – When you reach a forest corner, turn right down a
slabby fire break (take care especially if following this route in
reverse). When you meet a track at the bottom corner, turn
    left.
    • 62km – Cross a stream and continue to a forest road. Follow
this until you make a short steep climb to emerge onto a
better track. Turn right downhill to the main road

    Why so complicated?
    https://sligowalks.ie/walks/ballygawley-slieve-daeane/

you can drive about halfway up the road in the red circle...gets you closer and saves half the walk (if that's your thing)

    Peasant,

    thanks.

I took the next left on that map, after the left that you mark.

I was surprised by the Coillte forest, and at first I said well my memory must be poor, I must have walked through this forest 15 years ago.

But I think not, I'd say I used the road you mark, 15 years ago.

    Thanks.
