Wtf is going on with reporting these days? Sarah Healy had also already won her first gold for the 3000m in the European U-18 championships and apparently didn't deserve a mention. Sophie O'Sullivan is Sonia's daughter, let's mention her. Adeleke is a migrant so we absolutely have to have her in the headline. Sarah Healy? Ordinary Irish girl. Meh. Let's wait until she wins her second gold and then we might mention her. Sarah went on to win her second gold in the 1500m today.

That was Saturday results. Sarah won on both Friday and Sunday. She will wipe Sonia records in time.

Correction Sarah Healy was mentioned in two paragraphs. What's the issue?

You're reading the independent, so that's your first problem as it's pure gutter trash and you'd be better off reading the Sun.

Sarah Healy has been the main sports story on RTE all day and has been getting major coverage in the Irish Times for months now.

All the usual tabloid sites like Joe.ie, The 42 and Balls have been covering Healy well too.

    The Indo's headline literally said:

"Sophie O'Sullivan wins silver to add to 15-year-old Rhasidat Adeleke's gold for Ireland at European Championships".

No mention or hint that this latest medal was only for the Saturday. It's pure nonsense. Sarah won a gold the previous day and no mention of it. Since when has the Irish press only ever commented on national success in an international competition based on specific daily results?

Agreed about Sarah's prospects. Phenomenal talent.

The further in to the gutter you go the less decent reporting you'll find.

This weeks Irish Mail on Sunday had a near-full page story about a bloke shooting an otter on page 5. I lolled.

There is no mention of Sarah in the article I cited.

That's irrelevant. There was a headline article published after Sarah had already won a gold and they didn't even mention her. They mentioned Sophie's sivler and Rhasidat's gold, but absolutely no mention of Sarah's gold the previous day or her chance of gold the next day. Why?

Here's the headline article after she won her first gold on Friday: https://m.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/athletics/healy-underlines-supreme-talent-with-golden-run-37089782.html

Here's today's article on her second gold. It's currently the second story after the Leinster hurling final:
    https://m.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/athletics/irelands-sarah-healy-wins-her-second-gold-medal-and-smashes-record-in-the-1500m-at-european-championships-37093506.html

The article you linked was from yesterday, so the day between her two gold medal runs when other Irish athletes were performing, and Healy still gets mentioned. I don't see the problem tbh...

    She's Irish.

Getting to the real motive for this thread here I suspect. Hoping to be corrected.

The report you linked to was related to Saturdays results. Sarah Healy wasn't racing on Saturday. They did give a mention to Sarah Healy in the last paragraph btw.

Sarah Healy was racing on Friday and Sunday and they dedicated articles to her on both days. I know it doesn't fit whatever conspiracy theory you are alluding to but thems the facts

Congrats to all competitors in any case!

    She's Irish.

Of course she is, but she is of migrant origin so is of more interest to the headline writers. If Sarah was wearing a Hijab you can bet that her new would also have been in that headline.

Yes. Daughter's of celebrities or daughters of migrants are seemingly more newsworthy.

The only selectively reporting here is from you.

You’re linking to Saturday’s report when Sarah Healy didn’t run until Sunday. Unless the Indo has a time machine they’re going to be struggling.

Meanwhile here’s Sunday’s report and surprise, surprise it’s all about Sarah Healy https://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/athletics/irelands-sarah-healy-wins-her-second-gold-medal-and-smashes-record-in-the-1500m-at-european-championships-37093506.html

Oh and here’s Friday’s report and surprise, surprise it’s all about Sarah Healy https://www.independent.ie/sport/other-sports/athletics/healy-underlines-supreme-talent-with-golden-run-37089782.html

You pick the one day she’s not running and then whine that she’s being ignored.

Seems like you have an agenda here, and you are both lying and misrepresenting facts so you can have a go at Muslims.

What has that got to do with the point I am making about the press being selective about how they report events? Ireland won three gold medals at the European U-18 championships. A huge achievement.

An article was published in our main newspaper and it didn't even mention the athlete who had already won on gold and went on to win a second. Instead, they went with the more socially interesting aspect of Sonia's daughter and the daughter of a migrant. In the sport pages. If you don't see a problem with this, good luck to you in expecting honest reporting in the future.

It's been explained to you with links and dates by several people on this thread.

Healy has come in for particular praise in the media and is on the verge of becoming a genuine star in Ireland - which I hope is dampened as she's too young and as yet only has potential to go far so we need to manage expectations.

I'd have more respect for you if you made your racist motive clear from the outset and didn't try to frame it in the context of young underage athletes.

Seriously, give up the pretence and just be honest - you want to whinge about a black girl representing Ireland.

It’s laughable that you’re crying about selective reporting when you pick the one single news story from the meet that doesn’t mention Sarah Healy so you can have another thinly veiled attack on Muslims.

If you think Athletics has it bad in the media OP then consider motorsports. The only time they report on Irish motorsports is when someone gets killed. Thousands of people attend these events but unless someone dies the Irish media pretend it doesnt exist.

There is. I haven't clicked any other article other than the one you posted!

Adeleke's victory comes less than 24 hours after Sarah Healy secured Ireland's first gold of the Championships.

Healy created a little piece of athletics history last night by becoming the first Irish athlete to win gold at the European U-18 Championships, the 17-year-old Dubliner obliterating her rivals in the girls' 3,000m to win in a championship record of 9:18.05.

It does seem like a lot of success for Irish athletes which is great to see.

Have we finally for our act together and put a proper "medication" program going to allow our athletes to compete with the worlds elites?

Riot police got called to the tourist part of Benidorm in Spain on Saturday evening to calm down the England fans. Bars had to be shut down to make sure they couldn't get any more alcohol. Didn't see a word of this on the BBC.. A quick Google shows the Sun and the DM downplaying the behaviour and focusing on a police office who batoned a guy carrying his kid.

It's more like selective outrage. You're either reading the wrong papers, reading on the wrong day, or looking for something to complain about. There was plenty about Sarah in the papers .

    In short, its athletics.
A sport that disappeared down the peds plug hole years ago, and, rightly, most people have no interest in any more. Its really just a pharmaceutical contest of calculated risk/reward on how close the limit lines you want to try to get to without being caught. Or, to be really successful, with big resources behind you, dosing stuff that is on the cutting edge of being undetectable, or isnt even known about by the authorities to even try to test for.
So reporters arent really reporting on the sport result per se - there has to be some other catch to make it news worthy these days - daughter of a former high profile athlete, coloured girl competing for Ireland, or other such curiosities.
