Got a free 50g sample bag with my latest WCC order. Ethiopian with flavour notes of chocolate, strawberry and pecan. I'm normally not good with identifying flavor notes but this legitimately has an overt taste of sweet berries with a subtle nuttiness. It's almost like a sweet wine. SO GOOD.

    These are the beans:

Ethopian Coffee is brilliant, if I wasn't in the middle of one from B&D now I'd order that one

That's the one I was talking about a few posts up. It's lovely.

    Gonna make myself one now.

Got the Drima Zede by Ninety Plus from Imbibe with this months coffee club.

By far one of the weirdest coffees I've ever tasted. Tasting notes are dark chocolate, fig and cloves, and it definitely smells like cloves and the fig taste is fairly strong too.

Not a fan of it as filter, but might work out well as a higher ratio espresso.

I assume you mean Badger&Dodo? I think I might try them next as they're opening a new outlet on South Mall in Cork City. If their store is priced the same as the online store it'll be hard to pass up.

Any recommendations? Or ones to avoid?

Fairy Floss is delicious. I have the Jam Jar espresso too which is nice but I miss the Fairy Floss.

Did you not let it rest? They recommend 10 days for filter and 21 for espresso.

Ah I always take those with a pinch of salt, they were roasted on the 18th so 4 days post roast is usually grand. They're usually what they say is the "best" period for the beans but it's all subjective and you might only notice small differences.

B&M markup has them more expensive than the online price, in my experience.

Farmer browns has B&D at 24 euro for a KG which is cheaper than ordering direct. Well last time I got it which was before Covid. Actually it used to be 22 euro

    That is an amazing price:eek:

If the outlet they are opening in Cork is anything like the Galway one then it will be twice that price:eek::eek: I was paying anything within the range from €11 to €14 for 250g.

I was in Avoca shop in Monkstown Sunday, they had 250g of Bell Lane ( can’t remember name) for 6.95, albeit it was roasted in June.

    Did my first Ponaire order:

Ponaire Sumatra Single Origin Coffee- Love me an Indonesian as ye know.
Ponaire Indian Blend Coffee- The way these beans are treated also intrigued me and sounds like I'll like them
Ponaire Connoisseur Blend Coffee- Fancied a decent blend to have about the place when I'm running out the door.

Then herself wanted some tea (SEA BUCKTHORN, TURKISH APPLE JOGURT LIM), and as it was the same price as delivery and then gave me free delivery, then it was a no-brainer.

Hopefully I have them by Monday as my Burundian and Ethiopian are running dangerously low.

Decided to treat the parents who only drink decaf instant to something a bit better, Colombia - El Yalcon from 3fe, made using a v60, tasting notes of dark chocolate, marzipan, and possibly cherry.

Strong smell and taste of almonds come through on brewing, with subtle notes of cherry and chocolate, most other decafs I've had have had few notes come through to the cup but this was an exception, would recommend to anyone looking for decaf

I’ve ordered from them a good few times during lockdown. Each time they’ve delivered to me in Dublin within 48 hours.

I didn't rate Ponaire at all last time I tried them. How do ye compare them to the others? Especially in terms of washed single origins?

This is my first order. So I'll have to get back to you.

There's been enough positive reviews on here to give it a bash.

What was it you got from them? What didn't you like?

Anyone ever order from Ristretto up north? I know they were mentioned way back when on these pages, but that's before we had so much choice.

Only asking as a local shop cafe it, and the roast date was within the last few days and I enjoyed it so would consider ordering direct

Placed an order with WCC on Wednesday evening and received the beans this morning, always a reliable service.

Tried the Ethiopian Duromina based on the recommendations here.

Just didn't rate the coffee and thought there was a little too much of the roast in the cup.

Will do, it'll be a few weeks before I crack it open, I'm working through some older beans because I went mad in August!

    Surprising considering they use GLS

I was equally surprised when GLS delivered mine on time. I conclude they have at last started using eircodes. Perhaps one day, Fedex will even start using them.

I have never had an issue with any of my many orders from WCC either to Dublin or the sticks of Sligo.

My comment was directed at GLS - based on past problems with their inability to perform their core function - not WCC.

I know. I'm pointing out how I've never had a problem with GLS, despite their major handicap, which is being GLS.

Looking at ordering. Any recommendations from McCabes in Wicklow or Ponaire

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

Opened up the Connoisseur Blend from Ponaire yesterday morning. It's very nice. It's exactly what I was hoping for. It's not too rich and exactly the sort of coffee you can have a few of during the morning.

Will be straight into the rotation now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,511 ✭✭✭Damo 2k9

Put an order in for Ponaire last night about 11 o clock. Woke up to a DPD email this morning saying my coffee was dispatched
Went for the European blend and Peru Single Origin.

is this resealable type of bag not standard with all roasters?

B&D, 3FE and Bailies all have resealable bags

    Ponaire don't which is annoying.

    But I have this...

So my coffee goes straight in there. Class yoke.

They should all be resealable, compostable bags if at all possible. i'd use old oes to put grounds into then and keep them for the garden.

Agreed on the compostable. I can get over resealable with a clip on the bag.

if you buy green beans you can roast them in your oven

for the last 7 months I've been using rave for fresh roasted bean coffee subscription with an aeropress and burr grinder. If you've not used an aeropress before, it literally unlocked a whole new level of coffee tasting for me. https://ravecoffee.co.uk/pages/coffee-subscription

The aeropress makes any coffee taste good when prepared right, although I did try some bulletproof coffee once from amazon and my god it tasted like battery acid with like 200mg of caffeine in...

Agreed, literally some people will spend 30 minutes in the morning preparing and making their cup of coffee... I dont think I'll reach that level of pretending I can tell the difference :D

You can also use a heat gun, colander, pot and stir it a lot. I recently roasted 400g of beans. Didn't turn out too bad at all. Got 800 g for a tenner so was worth a go

Do they taste different to ones from actual roasters? I think I prefer trying a new bag every month for different flavours and origins tbh but each to their own, you probably saving more money doing it your way

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,768 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

It tasted like some beans I got from some place in town years ago (a tea place, near accents, that let you buy beans from various jars). Can't remember it's name, used to go for their huge variety of teas though.

It's also like some beans from Maher's in Cork. Can't remember which ones now, but my old boss used to bring them into work frequently

Very nutty taste profile I'd say, probably why I didn't dislike it.

Bit hard to grind though. It was my first go, I possibly had to much heat on them at times, and not enough others. I'd give it a go again, but not something I'd be doing too often.

I shop around myself, switch between online or buy from cafes or certain shops (lotts & co, Fallon & Byrne) etc.

A friend owns a cafe of some reknown too so just buy what he's selling now and again as it's generally excellent. I pass 2 3fes a day, 2 cloudpicker locations, 1 coffee angel, 1 selling bell lane, another doing silver skin and another doing upside and ristretto. Fairly well sorted for choice just between my front door and work (helps that I'm on a bike)
