I think Finucane will certainly beat the DUP candidate in this election.

Wow, I can't believe the Irexit party is taking such a move so early in their existence. :pac:

Word is we will have our first nomination today from Meath.

Already FG councilors are said (News at One RTE) to be planning to back Gavin Duffy if FF nominate Gallagher.

Hilarious stuff. FG in open revolt against HQ instructions.

    Gavin Duffy got it.
Duffy 17 votes, Gallagher 7 and Joan Freeman 2.

Is that Duffy’s home county. That’s an impressive win for him

No, he has connections with Louth and Kildare though. He has done media training with a lot of politicians though.

The Meath Ward Hunt would be Duffy's bailiwick. Will any of these stop once they get 4 or will they try and hoover up as many as possible to block others?

    What is your suggestion?

They should refuse to back joke candidates

Who are on your lists, of real candidates and joke candidates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

IMO, the "Real" candidates, as in people who seem to understand what the presidency is and aren't just attentions whores, are MDH and Joan Freeman.

The "Joke" candidates are everyone else.

Actually, listening to RTE Drivetime, seems he lives on the border of Meath and Louth.

People on Drivetime saying that Fine Gael councillors are supporting Gavin Duffy to block FF Gallagher getting a nomination.

FG's 'control' of the party didn't last long.

Good to see members of a political party allowed to have thoughts of their own - it doesn't happen in every political party.

FG instructed their councilors not to back a candidate.
Fine Gael has formally agreed to back Michael D Higgins for a second term as president and closed the door on its party councillors supporting a rival for Áras an Uachtaráin.

FG instructed their councilors not to back a candidate.

So, isn't it refreshing to see councillors capable of independent thought?

    New politics and all that.

    Oh yes, of course.
My criticism would be of FG for not manning up and running a candidate themselves because being the PR obsessed party they have become they feared losing.
Now they have to watch their councilors revolt all around the country.

I'm not complaining. I am having a good chuckle though.

One thing working in SGs favour is the FF envelope business probably won't bite him twice.

SG is saying suspiciously nice things about MDHs presidency which makes me think the dragons are in cahoots.

Like a nice cop/nasty cop routine? Duffy puts the boot into MDH while Gallagher remains all upbeat and statesmanlike...

    .
RTE's screw up has made it harder to scrutinize him further on this, then again McGuinness also got some of the details wrong.

Fair play to the FG councillors who defied the instructions and voted to nominate a candidate for the election.
After all they are elected by the local people and, do not have to take dictation from handlers in Dublin.

Yep, that is how it is being reported...'defied' the leadership. Another PR mess for Leo. Would there not have been a party hack who could have foresaw this happening?

Some are indeed amazed that County Councillors don't usually like any type of whip being imposed.

How is it a PR mess?

    Councillors engage in new politics?

You seem to be the only person concerned.

He's afraid of contagion. SF councillors might start getting notions.

It was headline news on RTE. Membership defies the leadership.

No biggie, just embarrassing and it may develop into some councilors out on the canvas and campaigning against the chosen FG candidate. :)
