How do you know what he does for the homeless?

There are very few socialists who will impoverish themselves, like everyone else Higgins has to cater for his future.
A bit of a mealy mouthedness around this 'scandal' tbh.

Well he had the opportunity to lead the way for all the other socialists including "three houses Gerry" but he didnt. Let the taxpayer pay for them

The rental stuff is a non-issue.

The potential scandals relate to the President’s apparent love for the trappings of office, his lie about only running for one term, allegations regarding his sexuality, allegations regarding his close relationship with a far younger male advisor, potential hypocrisy, his sickening public adoration for Castro et al, and the tax treatment of any rent not being paid by his daughter.

This man should not be running for the highest office in the land; he is an embarrassment.

Aside from unsubstantiated tittle-tattle, would voters care less about any politician's sexuality?

Mentioned it to my mother who is in her seventies to see if it would change her vote if there turned out to be any truth to that rumour. No impact on her vote. Wouldn't for me either.

As said, you have no idea what he does for the homeless. Nice shoehorn of something completely unrelated btw.

*And you might want to look at what socialism is about too. I don't subscribe to it as an ideology or policy but I know it isn't about impoverishing yourself.

I see the straw-clutching is in full swing.

If anyone thinks that Higgins shouldn't be President because he committed the unforgivable sin of renting out a property, they shouldn't vote for him.

If anyone thinks that they can persuade others not to vote for him for that reason, they should be prepare to be laughed at.

I notice that not even the Sunday papers are bothering to commission opinion polls for this election.

Enjoys his job? Wow, scandalous stuff alright!
his lie about only running for one term,
He didn't take a vow, he changed his mind. Another sulphurous scandal.
allegations regarding his sexuality, allegations regarding his close relationship with a far younger male advisor, potential hypocrisy,
Have you types not been told that a person's sexuality is their own business?
his sickening public adoration for Castro et al,
He admired SOME of the things Castro tried to achieve and recognised that it came at a social cost.
and the tax treatment of any rent not being paid by his daughter.
Is something illegal being alleged here?

Has any of the above affected how he performed his duties in the last 7 years?

I think you guys will need to keep digging in the dirt.

Higgins' poll rating can only fall from the heights of three weeks ago - the only question being whether any frontrunner will emerge from the pack, or whether any gains would be equally shared between Ní Ríada and Gallagher, given they would generally be considered the main challengers.
    Let's pretend they halve to 38% ?

No, imagine his first preference collapses to just 30% and Gallagher gets 40%

Last time around he was attracting 2.5 times the transfers as Gallagher.
So if 2% of votes are non transferable then on that basis the transfers would split with Higgins getting 20% (2.5 x 8%) and Gallagher 8%.

So it would be 50% vs 48%.

As long as Liadh is eliminated before Higgans he shouldn't have any problems because most of her transfers are going one way.

Our "socialists" certainly never risk impoverishing themselves

If they manage to elect representatives then as a democrat I couldn't object.
Are you who so recently got upset by the use of the word 'republican' suggesting we should be barring people with a mandate?

No. I'm suggesting that politicians should be above giving every crackpot viewpoint airtime.

Yes, of course, if you see it as 'crackpot'.

But you know and I know that is not how the world works. It takes all types and sorts and if they manage to elect representation then as a democrat I have to accommodate their views. I don't have to agree or believe them though.

I reckon this is a house for when he stands down as president. As far as I know, his only other property is an apartment he's had for years in Dublin, used when he was a TD.
he has a home in galway

So was Ni Riada elected as an anti-vaxxer? Or just thought it was a handy bandwagon to jump onto for a few votes?

I'd imagine she was elected to speak up without fear or favour about the concerns of her constituency.

Couldn't be assed informing herself on the vaccine though? She has more resources to look into the safety of it and the information was readily available at the time.

If there is a handy bandwagon anywhere, there is a SF politician running after it trying to jump on.

I do happen to think Anti Vaxx scaremongering is crackpot stuff.

Asking questions about the information available isn't crackpot in a climate were nobody has any trust or faith in the competence of our HSE.

You say that while I am watching, right now, our minister for Health getting roasted on social media for trying to turn today's poignant and tragic event in Kerry into his own bandwagon.

2015 President Michael D Higgins has urged bodies such as the City and County Managers' Association to apologise publicly for not valuing social housing more in recent decades. https://www.rte.ie/news/2015/0911/727205-higgins-housing/ this was an interest one

As I don't spend my life monitoring social media, I don't know what you are talking about, but I am sure it has something to do with the Presidency.

Nor do I spend my life monitoring it. But that doesn't mean it isn't happening.

Anti-vaxx scaremongering = questions about the perfectly clear information = crackpot stuff

Ni Riada has stridently and comprehensively stated her position on this. But you still claim she is Anti Vaxx. Once again, when it comes to a republican, you insinuate without the faintest shred of proof.

Not getting your children vaccinated = anti-vaxx

And it doesn't matter what you say, only what you do.

She's not a republican. She's a member of sinn fein, a party that uses the word 'republican' as a brand but that doesn't espouse republican values.

Not getting your children injected with something you cannot get clear trustworthy info on = good parenting to me.

Accepting fully that vaccine's benefits when you do access the info and advocating for an increased dispersal of it = good public representation to me.

To keep insinuating something and not backing it up = downright sinister political opportunism.

"Sinister". Same word as Ni Riada is using, to describe questions about... the exact same matter she went on the radio to broadcast to all that might hear.

Must have been word-of-the-week in the briefing pack.
