de rte probably fed him questions like there american friends did with their hero hillary

Going into conspiracy mode now.... Michael D answering questions about the presidency in a clear fashion because he understands what the role entails.

Casey effectively calling MDH an old fogey.

"I get up and work out at 5.30 am and that's why I should be President of Ireland, Cormac"

    - Peter Casey

Joan doesn't know what an article 26 is. Facepalm moment number 1.

Definitely had to use one of her lifelines there.

I'd totally refer it to... what was that yoke ye refer these things to, again?

Sean Gallagher is pulling Peter Casey there but it sounded very scripted.

Ni Riada going full-on "young and energetic". A little on-the-nose, there!

    He's not helping his 1%.

Why is Peter Casey a disgrace? He is the only one asking the questions that should be asked.

Again with the comments about his age

Ni Riada losing patience with Gallagher's protective, statesman act. Funny

    And it is an act.

Peter C attacks Micky D for being too old and Sean Gallagher leaps to his defence. Definitely playing the good cop.

Watching the debate on RTE Player and Gavin Duffy grimaced when Casey said "It's not his fault he's 77"

Don't think he's taking this too serious to be honest. Between that comment and his question to Michael D "What do you spend your salary on?", it sounds as if Seany has another brown envelope waiting for him so that he can look like the sympathetic good cop.

Very poor. Peter Casey seems like he's there to act the bollocks and not have the other two get dirty.

I dunno if it's that tactical. I think it's just that he's naturally rather liable to "act" the bollocks.

The president can address the oireachtas but it's not a requirement.

Yeah. I said weeks ago somewhat in jest that I wouldn't be surprised if the other dragons weren't there to do the dirty work for Gallagher. It's seeming less and less far fetched.

The other guys turning on each other now, and Gallagher only to quick to redirect back to Higgins.

Sean Gallagher is going out of his way to be respectful towards Michael D Higgins. I wonder what's his pitch ?

Copying Higgins own strategy seven years on of keeping out of the fray.

There are two clear camps developing. The three capitalist dragons are ganging up on Micky D. The three leftists are ganging up on Gallagher.

And if they were serious about that, why did they go with such a low-key candidate? If they genuinely believed Ni Riada would really resonate with the the public once they got to know her, that shows poor judgement on their part.

She's the least impressive of their MEPs, and doesn't really have the credentials of most of their TDs, either. I suspect it might be a bit of a case of the office junior having to do the rubbish jobs: making the tea, fetching the post, running for president on a hiding to nothing.

From the party's POV, I think they were in part itching to use their ability to make a nomination with their increased strength in the Dáil, and in part they saw it as a vote-building and brand-laundering exercise.

If she ends up third or fourth on 6%, it's a bit of a setback, but nothing serious at the end of the day.

I don't know what to take from that 'debate'. Duffy sounds like he's given up based on the polls, Freeman doesn't know anything about the presidency and tries to direct back to Pieta house every time, Na Riadh made no impression whatsoever, Casey is just a prick but we know that already, and Gallagher trying to be presidential by standing up for other candidates when it suits him, but won't answer any questions. Higgins was as I expected, just Higgins.

Edit, and now Duffy being a dick at the end.

Preferred pronoun "it", "they", or just "H"?
