Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

"X" means "good target", apparently. I wonder if these symbols are really used these days, apart from youngfellas playing pranks on their neighbours.

Did all the burglars have a convention to decide on the symbols? They must have been pissed when it got leaked.

They probably sorted it at the Thieves' Guild AGM.

They probably talk it over while waiting in the cells for the judge to give them the Probation Act for their dozens of breaking and entering offences.

It's good that burglars are being selfless enough to mark out that a property is a 'good target'.

I too would let all the other burglars in the area know that I found a good target. It would be so rude to keep this information to myself and take the goodies for my own benefit.

Well don't have large amounts of cash about the house. Ya hear of people being robbed and had €10K or whatever stolen. I know depending on whatever line of work you are in it can happen that you'd have large sums of money about but try not to.

Get an alarm, not sure if these can be hooked up to sheds? Buy a shotgun and learn to use it. Illegal to own a gun for self defense in this country though. It's not piss I'd be blasting them with but a 12 gauge.

Is there a bored teenager living nearby? Maybe have a chat with the parents, explain yer freaking out and ask them to find out if it was their lad, explain yer not pissed off if it was a teenager but upset/worried it may be more sinister.

Ask neighbors if it happened them or seen anything suspicious in the area.

First they came for the socialists...

You don't have a safe you weren't able to open inside the shed, do you?

That was buried deep in the ground and someone or something was digging a big hole trying to get down to it ??

I'd take a photo of it up close and in situ on the shed and then carefully wipe it away. No mark, no meaning, no worry. Then maybe print up a few beware of dog signs and put them around. Might stave off the less hardy. I'm very sorry to hear about your barky dog. :( maybe tume to consider planning to get your heart briken in another 18 years and get another ? Heat triggered lights on the shed and paths too. Don't make it easy for the thieving scum :( They are already on your property and creeping around. Gaurds will always take the path of least effort. Ah sure it'll be grand - not.

Hang a picture of Padraig Pally next to it, He is the St of Blasting away.

Spent rifle rounds scattered around the yard will help too.

Watch Home Alone for more security ideas.

Seriously let the Guards know and your Neighbours also.

Safe to assume the OP met a horrific end then just like the one with the mounds in the shed in Wicklow?

Both in the upside down now God love them

Being serious, I'd get a dog, a very barky one if possible. They're great for deterring unwanted visitors if you live in the countryside.

    Get one of these..

    Hi all,

Woke up this morning to see someone had chalked an X on my shed - is this some sort of indicator to thieving scum to rob me or has this happened anyone before?

I’d say you’re in trouble, it would be difficult to come back from this, always hard to win when you don’t go first, but it’s still possible.

I have cctv around the place but no dog. Will ring the local Garda now and see what they say

Did you check the cctv to see who put the x there?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Cut off a goats head and attach it to the upper quarter of the “X” **

Write the number 6 in each of the remaining quadrants of the “X”

    Rest easy.

    ** Don’t actually do this

No no, totally do this. Be worse than them. Make THEM fear the madman who lives in the house. Fight fire with more fire.

There was an 6 piece McNuggets box on my shed roof weighed down with half a lemon once. I'm pretty sure that was an indicator left on it as one to rob.

Times you wish you were rich so you could just leave the 'X' there and hire a pack of goons to wait inside.

Criminals often do this with banks they are going to rob as well - place a large 'X' for the world to see their intention.

Actually, come to think of it, that's a great idea for an app! 'Burglar Pal - See a house that you want to rob? Just add it to your favourites and away you go!'

You've been nominated to take part in a game of home alone, you have one night and one day to prepare the house with the most elaborate traps using common household items.

I have a DOG. End of ... end of intruder too.. ;)
