Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I recently purchased a converted Ford Transit camper and am looking for recommendations for the best kind of bike rack to add to it. I'll need to still be able to open the doors at the back of the van to access stored items and the gas bottle. But would like to be able to carry a bicycle or two when driving.

Theres a few options depending on how many bikes and how heavy they are.

If you google barn door bike racks youll see the fiamma door mounted ones.

Then there is the altera strada that lowers away from the doors you'd want to double check the clearances.

We just use a normal thule 4 bike rack mounted on the towball and i lift it off with all the bikes still attached and locked. Not an option for my wife though.

There are also swing away bike racks but tend to be astronomically expensive.

I have an alloy type carrier that is similar to the Fiamma carry-bike but a little stronger, it came with the 'van but I am sorely tempted to fit a towbar and one of the Cykell carriers which look much better.

Unfortunately I don't have a towbar because the towbar carriers look so handy.

Secondhand towbar is about 50 quid and super easy to fit. If youre lucky you'll find one in the scrapyard with the adapter loom and all.

I'd much prefer to hang bikes off a towbar then the rear doors, the loading they experience on bumpy roads is a pretty high and I don't think it does the door hinges any good.
Fiamma used to sell 4 bike carriers that bolted to the back of coachbuilt 'vans and they stopped selling them because the weight caused damage to the wall.
Towbars are much better at dealing with loading, they are designed for it.

To be fair to fiamma many coachbuilts are made from 2x1s, tinfoil and toilet paper and they specified weight limits that people probably exceeded two or three fold with those full suspension boat anchors that were big in the naudies.
