Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Rosie O'Donnell. Now that man right there I'd hate to fight. She wears underwear with dick holes in them.

    Semi-serious answer: Dolly Parton.
Came from humble beginnings, used her talent to make her name in a male-dominated industry and held her nerve when put under pressure by that industry, has done a huge amount of work for charity in the US, always comes across very humble and gracious in interviews.

In the world of politics, New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern seems to be a good role model from what I've seen of/heard of/read about her. Would be great if her success got more young women (and indeed young men) involved in politics, though she's still relatively new in the job so I guess there's plenty of time for her to fúck something up.....

    Judge Judy

Great example. A real judge turned megarich TV personality. I have a lot of respect for her even if I don't enjoy her show.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,522 ✭✭✭paleoperson

What do you mean you don't like her show. If you don't like how she does things then you don't like her.

Just being "megarich" or a "tv personality" is a rubbish basis for being a role model surely.

No need to be semi-serious.. She's an admirable woman becoming successful in a very male dominated area, and surviving the country music scene which chewed up all manner of singers/songwriters. Saw her in a small concert a decade ago. Absolutely brilliant.

I respect her because she is an actual judge who has brought herself to a point of 10m daily viewers. You absolutely do not have to like the actual thing someone does to respect them. I don't like cave diving but I respect the divers in Thailand.

She is a very impressive lady. I like her common sense, not bothered about political correctness approach. Could do with a few Judge Judys in Ireland

I admire her more for that. The church brutalised this country and held women back too.

I have been blessed with a small number of older women friends, who are still kicking it live, traveling, looking fabulous, ladylike yet able to climb mountains and skinny dip in the sea, not short of an opinion, talented and creative, delightfully girlish in their late years, and so on - it is this handful of adventurers who are my role models, and I'm incredibly grateful for them. In the more shallow celebrity line of things, I have always been impressed by Juliette Binoche, not only because she looks so lovely but because she is sparky and determined. As long as she is older than me and keeping cool I feel some hope! :p

Mother Theresa was an evil bitch, made people suffer, refused them antibiotics and pain relief. Told them they were closer to God because they were suffering then made them suffer more. None of the money she collected went to treat the sick, instead it went to build churches

    Or Meeseeks.

But the point is: equating suffering and pain with some form of enlightened connection isn't nessecarily an evil philosophy.

In answer to the question, though - how come no-one's mentioned Louise O'Neill yet? (Or have they? Maybe - not reading back to find out!)

    Madonna, maybe?

Serena Williams. The GOAT. Constantly breaking down perceived boundaries and going against the traditional norm.

Tennis player from Compton, changes the game with her power, ends up retiring the traditional players like Hingis and co, wins a zillion majors, still plays grand slam doubles when none of the elite players do, marries a white guy (still very frowned upon with black communities), takes a career break to have a child, nearly dies, still comes back to tennis, reaches Wimbledon final after a few months.

The women I admire are the.... getting up and getting on with it types, so in particular order one of my sisters who despite having horrendous things happen to her husband and will spend her life looking after him she just gets up and gets on with it no feeling sorry for herself no woe is me.

One of the bosses I had while not perfect just got on with it and was a very nice person.

Angela Merkel no fuss, no drama and just gets on with it.

Had a career as a physicist and then went on to become the most powerful person in Germany. I'd have huge admiration for her and think she'll go down very well in history.

Is she not at least partly defined by her breakup with a guy? I think that arguably fails the role model Bechdel Test ...

Yeah, how dare she complain about the system that sadistically beat her youngest brother, think she’d keep her mouth closed.
Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman. Amazing women who fought for what was right. Harriet has a shocking story of violence and abuse against her. She not only fought back but freed many other slaves including her family. Rosa Parks always seemed so dignified in her protest. I honestly admire these ladies.

Anyways getting back to the thread, I would say Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a lot of modern women wouldn't have the rights they have if it wasn't for her.

The same woman that told millions of impoverished women to have as many kids as possible, indirectly contributing to a life of misery, if these women had fewer children they could have had decent lives.

She was an evil oul witch.
