Stroll does not belong in F1

Williams could be added to the list the way they are running things

Meh. Doubt he was going to be challenging Vettel.

Bottas less than two tenths off Vettel in the opening gambit of Q3....Hamilton definitely would have been in the hunt.

Kimi will be having his usual Q3 'slip up' any moment now...

Edit - yep, yellow in sector 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭Mike Litoris

Some lap by Bottas there. Even better by Vettel.

Kmag and Grosjean 5th and 6th is a scary prospect. :p

That music is fcukn terrible. They need to drop that crap.

Inconsistency again, that's why Leclerc needs to be in that seat next year

He's doing it at almost every track now, on the cusp of pole, and seems to drop a few tenths to an error.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,648 ✭✭✭✭skipper_G

Yeah, looks like Williams fixed some of their aero issues and Sirotkin made the most of it. Stroll and Ericsson are the bottom rung of pay drivers.

Impressive from Perez alright. He's been kind of anonymous of late. Did Ocon have an issue or just a howler of a session?

Hamiltons helmet is off btw! :p

I didn't hear Ocon give his comments so not sure if there was a specific reason why or just a howler.

It's great to to see Ferrari up there. If mistakes from Hamilton or team help them out then so be it. Mercedes have had it handy enough for the past few years

I think I'm just tuned into it now. Anyway, Kimi & Bottas to touch tomorrow while Seb sails off into the sunset for a handy 25 points :D

Funny how Lewis said bouncing over the kerb had nothing to do with his retirement and then straight after, Toto said it was indeed the kerb jump that caused the failure.

Unfortunately Hamilton's ego would never allow him to admit that he did something wrong or that something may have even a hint of his fault about it.

No surprise that he continued to drive his car when he was asked to stop it as well, typical of the tantrums you get from him when something goes wrong and his poor attitude.

Hamilton is an excellent driver but this kind of stuff is why you either love him or hate him with nothing in-between. Vettel is no angel at times but at least you don't see him get out the tantrum every time something doesn't go his way.

He also said that this track is one of the hardest for overtaking. I thought this was one of the better tracks for overtaking in regular conditions.

Are we certain the replays and team radio were synced in an, 'as it happened' way? Brundle made the point that he wasn't sure if Lewis did continue to drive or not, as it depends on when he got that message. The replay made it appear he got the message a few seconds after the bumps, but they're often delayed.

There absolutely is an in-between viewing of Hamilton. You don't have to be a rabid fanboy/girl of his, defending his outbursts, and blaming everyone and everything around him when things go wrong, to enjoy what he brings to the table. Yes he makes mistakes, yes he displays brilliance, it's all part of who he is as a person. Don't like him, fine...like him, fine, there is definitely a comfortable middle ground though.

I wonder who will get fired for Hamilton's error. Poor lad doesn't know when to admit failure.

I did see one comment which mentioned the loss of power steering due to loss of hydraulic pressure might have been the reason he ran off. And not a mistake Hamilton would normally make in Q1. So probably wasn't Hamiltons fault

    Max, Kmag and Romain 4th 5th 6th

And the hydraulic loss also forced him to keep the throttle on right through the corner and across the curb on the straight? No chance, if the PS had failed before the corner he'd have been on the brakes, not the throttle.

That is just a blatant attempt by the Merc PR to bolster the manchild's fragile ego after he denied all responsibility.

You don't know when the power steering dropped out though - could have been before the corner, could have been on entry, could have been mid corner, could have been as he was straightening up. Depending on where it happened, and considering this is split second decision motor racing, it could have simply been his instinct to power through and hope it was just a glitch. Yes the team asked for an engine switch off, he's only hurting himself by not wanting to give up...the man is fighting for a championship here, while we're in the comfort of our armchairs apparently with all the answers.

Personally I feel that's total nonsense. There's no way a multinational premium brand manufacturer is going to call out a very public reliability issue, just to massage the ego of their driver who made a mistake. That's loony bin conspiracy theory stuff.

Looks like we’ll have an interesting race. Hamilton fighting in the middle but in less than 10 laps he’ll be already putting pressure on Ricciardo. Meanwhile Vettel will once again beat Bottas on the start and go away for a monotone win. Verstappen will once more finish ahead of Ricciardo... or maybe nothing like that will happen. Let’s see.

Watching the replays again it does look like the jumps over the final kerbs were pretty bad and it was a bit clumsy to hit them (Brundle even said he had been wide there a lap before), very likely that's what did the damage.

Hamilton to be involved in contact in one of the first 3 corners.

Are you serious? Toto already said what the data told them, it happened when the car went over the raised bumps. Even Hamiltons interview was telling, he hesitated when asked about a link to his going off and the hydraulic issue.

Mercedes have consistently massaged Hamilton's ego , to the extend of having the strategist make a very public apology when they failed to pit him.

I'm not getting any hopes up, chance of rain is still less than 50% for the race. The thunderstorms are probably going to hit after the race.

Yes they will massage his ego, but not at the expense of brand image/reliability.

Some would argue that it would be better for brand image for them to back Lewis now to keep him calmer even if he is in the wrong and made an error, than blame him which may well result in him attacking the team publicly which would be far more damaging for the team.

I seem to remember a certain event in the past where he threatened to leave the team if they blamed him for something because he claimed it wasn't his fault.

You're suggesting there that Mercedes, their team management, their sports division, and board of management, are all thick enough to allow an F1 driver to hold them ransom. Not an avenue of thought I'd consider very likely.

Toto said "we seem to have damaged a bit on the car jumping over the kerb and that caused an hydraulic leak BUT the car is just coming back so we need to check whether that's really the case"

Then after the car comes back the team check it and are able to confirm that the leak was the cause of running wide not the effect. There's no big cover up or conspiracy ffs.
