The fines are tiny compared to what his insurance would be. The man is saving a fortune, very shrewd.

Con Barry, solicitor for Mr Mason, said there is no getting away from his client’s previous convictions.

“There were tragic circumstances around this time,” said Mr Barry, who told Kilmallock court a person close to the family died in a road traffic accident. Judge Marian O’Leary said: “Yet, he goes out and drinks and drives...”

It's an incredibly flawed justice system which will never be tackled correctly. The Government claims it cares about justice however has never put in the time, effort or resources to show it.

The lack of prison spaces, reform of the prison service, social services, probation service and gardaí says it all. Not to mention the judicial system which hasn't been touched since the foundation of the state.

Even with all the plans to reform AGS - there's no point in doing anything unless the systems and services to back them, as above, are also reformed into taking on additional roles and responsibilities with a decrease in bureaucracy.

Long story short - expect many people with 100/200+ convictions to walk freely among us without any genuine attempt at punishment or rehabilitation during their time in the system.

A lifetime driving ban would be in order but even then would it be enforced.

The goose that lays golden eggs .

Solicitors, judges, court clerks and civil servants are all being paid while pieces of sh#t like this carry on, possibly on free legal aid. The detection numbers get a welcome boost for AGS as well. These people are the bread and butter of the legal profession.
Why would the judges rock the boat??

It gets better, that same guy has an article about him a month later:
A man with nearly 500 previous convictions who was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty to careless driving causing the death of a teenager tried to sue the family of the deceased, it has emerged.

Eamon Lynch was driving at 165kph when he struck Shane Patton’s car on the main Ballybofey to Letterkenny road near Drumkeen, Co Donegal, in July 2012.

Father-of-three Lynch was drunk and had no driving licence, valid NCT, tax or insurance on his car when he hit the 18-year old who had just completed his Leaving Cert. He was sentenced last month.

Lynch had almost 500 convictions, including 280 for traffic offences and 50 for burglary.

It has since emerged the Derryman tried began an insurance claim against the Patton family’s insurance company 123.ie in relation to the crash.
In societal terms, net benefit / loss etc, really, hand on heart, what is the point of this loser?

Quite honestly execution would be merited. He is a complete waste of space, who only knows how to do bad things, is incapable of reform, and has now killed someone who had his whole life ahead of him (and doesn't seem to give a damn).

The only thing is that that would be a slippery slope you don't really want to go down.
