Caught Shoplifting

Ok, yes I was caught Shoplifting, call me what you want. I need advice. The manager says he has me on camera and he said he thinks I robbed €1,500 worth of goods.

I admit that I have robbed but I dispute the amount. The items that I robbed would have been nappies, bread, soft drinks.
He says he doesn't want to call the Garda but he wants money off me.

I have never been in trouble with the law and I am very nervous now. I don't know what to do. Should I call the Garda, go to a solicitor....?

    Could I go to prison?

    Any advice please.

€1,500 in one go, or over several visits to the shop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,061 ✭✭✭Uriel.

I assume you're long gone off the premises and not in a position to hand back the goods?

    Does the manager know you?

    You're not a great thief.

Go talk to the manager and ask him how he reckons what you stole amounts to 1500, stinks like blackmail to me..if you can't come to a deal with him let him get the guards and if you end up in court inform the judge about the pay off the manager wanted from you for a few items..if you weren't in trouble before a jail sentence would be highly unlikely.

Why would you call the Guards?

It would be virtually impossible to steal that much from a supermarket in one go. That would be the equivalent of five or six full trolley loads of groceries (unless you had taken 50 litres of vodka or whiskey or something)

Such a defeatist attitude...aim high, such as the top shelf with the premium vodka, wont be long getting 1.5k of liquor!

Can he prove that you stole items on several occasions, does he have CCTV footage?

    Call the Gardai. Admit everything.

Do it before the manager gets to them first.

Trolley full of clothes/textiles could easily add up to that. They may have the OP on camera from several visits and were waiting to nab him. I know the security guys where I work sometimes do this.

Rob him again, that will teach him to mess with you

If you cough up some of the money he will likely just bar you from the shop and forget about it.

Some of the nappies cost more than the vodka.

I'd imagine the OP has no idea of the total value of all her loot.

why don't you honestly estimate how much value you stole and pay him that amount. no skimping.
I guess that if he's the manager, not the owner - then contact the owner or higher up manager instead.

I honestly don't know. It was nappies, Spar ones, took them a few times, bread sweets/soft drinks.
I don't believe it is what he said. Maybe €300

If you do go back for a chat, record it in case he asks for payment in kind. That'll get ya off the hook, he may end up paying you 1500 for silence

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,661 ✭✭✭fxotoole

On a more serious note, this lad is obviously a chancer. Get a solicitor to write to the owner of the shop. If this lad is trying to extort you, I’m pretty sure the shop owner would be less than impressed that his store manager is trying to extort people!

Sorry mate, you’re a serial robber. Fair enough if you stole once, maybe a mistake, second time....meh, but after that, you knew what you were doing. I can’t think of a defense for your mistake.

Did you remember to use your loyalty card?
You might be able to work out the amount from points earned!

    Hi OP

There is a chance this manager could be reading/ be made aware of this thread. Maybe you're not too worried about that.

I'm not looking for a defence. I know what I done, it's kind of an addiction for me, I don't always do it. I just sometimes get an urge to do it. No excuse, I'm the first to admit that I'm a scumbag for doing this.

Over how long of a period this occur?
Did you use the items or pass them onto other people?

Tell him you need time to think about it. Wait a week or 2 and hope the cctv footage has been wiped and that he didnt make a backup
