Scholes cleared by the EFL to take over at Oldham, no conflict of interest with his involvement with Salford. Probably won't announce fully until after the game tomorrow. Exciting times ahead so long as the deal goes through!!!!

Well done to Brian Barry Murphy for winning his first game as caretaker manager of Rochdale.:)

Darren Moore likely to be sacked according to Talksport. Seems very harsh for a blip.

Oh no...that would be jumping to a serious conclusion. Merely that there must have been more, maybe he and the chairman didn't get along.

Must the most ludicrously high bar ever set for a manager: automatic promotion this season or you're out.

Wow, that was decisive and obviously crazy. So who'll slot in, and is it for 10 games or permanently?

First time I saw the clout it briefly crossed my mind the guy was "one of ours" annoyed at Grealish for "betraying the land of his fathers." Then my Dad pointed out it was the Birmingham derby...

I think that steward was led away by police then.

The Birmingham chap has been given 14 weeks in jail for assaulting Grealish. Swift justice.

14 week and 10 years match ban, which isn't nearly long enough.

Thought he'd get 6 months given the high profile of the assault and it's the max a magistrates court can hand down, so it's a bit light.

He pleaded guilty so he'd have to get a third off anyway. The victim went on to play a football match, so was relatively unharmed.

The main reason he is seeing prison is because it was captured on TV and because it was high profile.

Two championship games live on Sky again tonight. Pity they wouldn't do this some evening they weren't up against the Champions League...

Nearly all the midweek Championship games have been shown live on Sky, either on a channel or behind the red button. They do usually coincide with the Champions League though.

Yeah exactly, people assault others far worse than that, including police getting assaulted, victims requiring hospital treatment etc. and don't even get a custodial sentence.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Scholes gone from Oldham. Christ on a f00king bike. Only 7 games in. Owners fault.

Abdallah needs to go, too much interference, sick of him.

Sounds like Scholes was told one thing about what he could hope to do when manager but the actual reality was very different.

Anyone watch the Netflix documentary Losers about Torquay United?
The 1986–87 season saw automatic relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference introduced into Division Four for the first time. With the final game of the season to go, Torquay were third from bottom on 47 points; below them were Burnley on 46 points and Tranmere Rovers, also on 47 points but with an inferior goal difference. Lincoln City had 48 points and seemed in least danger.

The final game of the season was against Crewe Alexandra, featuring a young David Platt, at Plainmoor. At half-time Crewe were leading 2–0 and things looked bad for Torquay, two minutes into the second-half Torquay's centre-half, Jim McNichol, scored from a free kick but despite an all-out attack, Torquay seem unable to get the equaliser even hitting the crossbar. Tranmere secured safety by winning their final game on the Friday night. Burnley were winning their game, and while Lincoln were being beaten by Swansea, they would still finish above Torquay by a single point as things stood.

Seven minutes from time a piece of football folklore was created. A police dog by the name of Bryn appeared to think that Jim McNichol was running to attack his handler, and sank his teeth into the centre-half's thigh. It was during the resultant four minutes of injury time that Paul Dobson scored possibly the most important goal in the club's history, and kept them in the Football League, with Lincoln dropping into the GM Vauxhall Conference. This was dubbed by many as "The Great Escape"[7] – something United fans have had to become very familiar with in subsequent years.
Any other Weird or unusual stories around clubs?

Surprise (to me) win for Sheffield United at Leeds there. Could Leeds yet miss out on promotion even though they look like the championship team best equipped to flourish in the premiership?

Isn't a huge surprise tbh, SU unbeaten in 9 before now. Gutted

Coventry one point off the play offs with a win at Peterborough. Remarkable job by Robins, given the circumstances and doubt over existence next season.

If that is the reason for their deduction didn’t Wolves essentially do the same thing losing £52m in the process but as they got promoted and are now out of the EFL’s jurisdiction, nothing will happen?

No points deduction for QPR either. Leicester also cheated their way to Premier League promotion.

Very, very inconsistent it seems. Although I know Birmingham broke an embargo so perhaps that’s why they’ve been punished more severely?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,463 ✭✭✭Kiwi_knock

As a Birmingham fan, can't have too many complaints about the points deduction as we did break the rules. Would fault why it has taken this long to actually deduct the points when it was clear the rules had been broken last summer. Hopefully there is some consistency and other clubs in the same position are punished similarly in the future. Birmingham wasn't the only team last summer under a soft transfer embargo and having the EFL oversee the business plan. Unfortunately breaking that embargo does seem to have riled up the EFL, particularly when they did have to agree to register Pedersen after he threatened legal action, which certainly meant that a points deduction was inevitable. But the EFL should now be strict and consistent in applying these rules.

Hopefully Birmingham should have enough to stay up, but the small squad size has definitely started to catch up on us in the last few weeks so could be a couple of nervy weeks ahead.

God that QPR change strip is hurting my eyes. I'd say it has the opposite effect to the legendary Man Utd grey jerseys: everything but your teammates fades into the background...

    Ipswich Town are relegated.

They have been the longest serving team in The Championship, since about 2003 so 17 odd years.

Anyone know who are now the longest team in The Championship ?

Sunderland 4-5 Coventry in what is a grudge match.

Coventry are unbeaten away to Luton, Barnsley, Sunderland, Charlton and Peterborough with Portsmouth and Doncaster to still go to, but drew with Bristol Rovers, AFC Wimbledon and lost to Oxford and Rochdale at home

Bolton relegated, you'd fancy they could just fall through the remaining professional divisions. Their next owner looks as much a chancer as their last.

In fact how the hell does this fella pass the unfit and improper persons test?

Forestieri goal for Wednesday was probably a goal of the season contender, and the game itself was a fantastic watch!!
V dodgy second goal for the Owls, but fantastic last min free kick for Norwich.
I need to watch more of the Championship. Some great games!

Norwich trying their best the last while to keep the other 2 in the title race. Looking like theyre heading for their 4th draw on the trott (3 of them 2-2)

That was an unbelievably bad decision by the ref not to give the pen to Leeds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,688 ✭✭✭✭Muahahaha

Lads what happened Leeds? Havent looked at the table in ages but at Xmas they looked certainties for straight promotion.

Also Norwich/Sheff Utd- are they in anyway equipped financially/player wise to stay at least a season in the PL or are both likely to go straight back down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,858 ✭✭✭✭Loafing Oaf

Sheffield United win, that's pretty much themselves and Norwich guaranteed promotion AFAICS...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,080 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Chris Wilder and Alan Knill are some team. Worked miracles at Northampton before doing the same with Sheffield United.

how big a surprise is this top 2? I read a large volume of championship season previews for ahem, investment purposes, and I don't remember Norwich being mentioned at all.

The only certainties about the Championship is that Leeds will blow it and Derby will choke at the last.

That's normally in January though. Wonder what'll happen if play each other in the playoffs...can both screw it up?
