    Hi
Quick question my parents who are both 80 need to take the train from Dublin to cork on Sunday. The last time they travelled by train on a bank holiday was a terrible experience with a very over crowded train and a lot hen and stags.
In fact they got off the train early and I collected them..
They both have a travel pass but I am willing to pay extra for them to go in first class carriage if possible.
I have looked on line but I can’t see how they might upgrade with the pass..as I said we are willing to pay the difference..
Anyone any idea of how much this might cost and if I can do this on line.
    Thanks

Go to the Irish Rail website and fill out the journey details at the top of the page but instead of clicking on "go" click on seat reservations only.
Tick the boxes for both passengers and then click continue, and then press the go button. That should give you the option to buy a first class upgrade. Prices for Dublin Cork should either be 12.50 or 25.00 each depending on the service.

Clare and Galway are playing in Thurles, KO 2pm this sunday so expect extra passengers on that line before and after the match.

Correct me if I am wrong but that's the seat cost, are they not obliged to purchase the free ticket and then pay the 15.00 upgrade fee?

They get their free ticket at the station and use it with the first class reservation that they bought online. The online upgrade rates for the cork line are 12.50 or 25. Not sure where your 15 would come into it.
Seat only reservation Is an option for customers who are in possession of a valid standard class ticket(s), seasonal ticket(s), Taxsaver ticket(s) or InterRail and Free Travel pass holders to reserve a seat in standard class. Customers who have a valid standard class ticket but wish to upgrade to First Class should also use this selection

My understanding was FTP who wanted to use FC on any route had to pay 15 euro to upgrade (standard on all routes) but that was before online seat reservations.

Just wondering, Are you guaranteed a seat if you book first class?

I’m taking about the dublin Cork service if that makes a difference.

As part of booking first-class online, you are also choosing your seat which then is yours.

In my experience, the host in the first class car is very good at ensuring everyone has paid for first class (well unless they know the person) who is in the car and if there are no seats than there are no upgrades.

And unless it's some specific times, most of the times the first class is not that full. Sometimes it's nearly full but giving the seat reservations there is no standing.

Now, what happens if you purchase a ticket and an upgrade on the day at a counter and the car is full, that is something only the gods know.

Anyone who books a seat in advance is guaranteed a seat, regardless of which class it is. Of course, that includes clearing people out of your seat if they decide to sit in it
