There was an EI 707 on standby in FCO in case the 747 went tech.
Ah. So not another B747 then.
Im confused about the timings then. 2 of the 3 B747 were named St.Patrick at one time. I assumed it was around then, must have been another time due to leasing one out.

    I think EI-ASJ was St. Patrick from 1971 to 1975, EI-ASI was St. Patrick 1979 to 1994.

    Unlikely to be Pope-related.

It didn't seem to be going anywhere flew around in a circle about 6 times. This area is being shut down with road closures at the visit. So I was wondering if it was surveying or something.

Saw it myself over Sandymount, looked to be a survey plane perhaps.

2408 is actually a normal 'extra' flight, so its an extra 408 which is a Dublin to Rome flight

Sad state of affairs that we no longer have air corp jets to accompany the papal flight!

One of my only and lasting memories of the 1979 papal visit (...I was 7) was walking to the Phoenix Park, and just outside the park, seeing the Pope's aircraft (Aer Lingus 747 IIRC) fly straight over, relatively low, on the way to DUB, flanked by two jets (I assume Fouga).

The PC-9s can do 300 knots so they are capable of doing the job, granted they're not jet powered obviously.

I'd hope they won't do anything. He has done nothing to the irish people so why does he deserve a military escort?

Not really my point! Lack of Air Corps jets was the point.

The Pope is the head of The Holy See is is usually accorded formalities associated with visiting Heads of State. In addition this visit has the added symbolism as he is the Head of the Roman Catholic Church, which is the most common religion in the nation.

Regardless of your personal views the formalities will be observed.
EG, a few years ago the Pope flew to NY. There was a ground stop in JFK on his arrival and then again a little later as he left via Marine HMX-1 helicopter with 4 ship MV-22 Osprey escort.

FYI no training has been conducted this week for any formation flying with a jet. Usually the would practice with the Lear but I haven’t seen anything.

It is not a state visit! He is arriving on a private visit for a private event. So the Irish state and its defence forces are not obliged or required to provide any escort etc.

Without wishing to be disparaging , i dont see the point of the Irish Air Corp providing an escort with the planes that they have.In my opinion the lack of a jet plane means they look a bit comical with these types of ceremonies.

They can. Just can't intercept and lack air-to-air capability...

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

In fairness Tenger said he is a visiting head of state, not that it's a state visit.

A self invited visit I might add. And is getting all the red carpet treatment that an official state visit would apply to, typical lap dog Ireland.

Absolute joke of an air corps

Joke of a government you mean. It's not the Defence Forces fault that they've been underfunded for years.

Yeah, cos other countries wouldn't do the same. They'd tell him to get the bus and book his own b&b. He'll have to pay extra for breakfast too.

No requirement for presidential or government meetings.

I don’t live in other countries btw

As Vic points out I didn’t say it was a State visit, but that he treated similarly to a Head of State.

Did you miss the part about the US president using his personal Marine squadron to the escort the Pope? Not to mention the disruption to one of the busiest airports in the World. (And I presume the vehicle convoy once he landed in the city)
I must try find my pics of the 4 choppers leaving JFK. Luckily I was seated at a left hand window and was able to spot them. The pilot had announced the reason for the delay as we stopped for about 15-20 mins.
