40 or 60 mins total time in oven?

Looking at this recipe it says to put base in for 20 mins .then to add topping and return to oven until set-about 40 mins. Is that 40 mins on top of the previous 20, or for another 20 mins so 40 mins total time ?

I'd definitely read that as 40 minutes in addition to the initial 20, so 60 minutes total

You are not a dumbo! In fact, it's very smart to check when you are unsure. Would be a shame to waste your time and effort and the ingredients by just ploughing ahead and not admitting that you are not sure what you are doing.
