Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Car ads in mileage

Anyone noticing the increasing number of ads to quote mileage. I used to think it was only UK cars but now Irish km cars are being quoted with mileage, presumably to catch people out thinking its low in km terms.

The only thing I notice is the amount of private sellers selling imports without the VRT paid.

Presuming you buy one of them after the 30 days are you held liable?

The owner is liable for the VRT. As for the 30 days I assume there is some sort of shadiness that deals with this. Wouldn't buy a car this way myself.

30 days from import. No checks coming from NI if you want to lie when you buy a previous import.

Stupid people don't realise that they are buying from a trader but not get any protection

Anyone getting caught out between km and miles would want to be pretty thick.

Some sellers put in whichever is lower - km or miles not to put potential buyers off. Others just put in whatever figure they see on the dashboard and don't remember whether it's in miles or km. Same as clueless people who don't take decent pictures or add a decent description in the advert.

Back when I sold cars I would always write in miles as it was a lower number. People have a psychological tendancy to dismiss a car once it goes over 100k miles to begin with so a car advertised as 105k miles sounds a lot better than 170k km.

The odometer on my last 2 cars was in miles. So distance was advertised in miles.

A lot of people here still "think" in miles. From MPG to average mileage per year, total mileage etc. Makes sense that they'd then advertise this way

I think it should be mandatory to put both as so many are still not metric esp old folk.

Speaking of car ads - anything on foreign plates should be excluded. Pay the bloody VRT and get the new plates.

I would agree with you except we have people who are busy looking at colour, fancy spec, nice wheels to be too bothered about mileage so as other posters have said, it triggers something in mind. I personally think anyone quoting miles is simply trying to dress it up better than it is in reality and hoping ne clicks.

I'd say it's the private seller on DD and such he is referring to.
