For me, the S-pen is a gimmick. I even went as far as buying the regular sized Samsung S-pen for use with my Note 5, that lasted all of 2 days.

I love the big screen and the large battery, but is performance really an issue with modern phones? My S8 will do me fine.

    Note 5 with full-size S-pen for sale, btw. :)

For the guys leaning towards the blue model, any reason why? I haven't been able to find decent video of it online but with the yellow S Pen it looks a bit like a toy to me? Could just be the publicity images samsung released but the black model looks far sleeker to me.

Yep I've had all black phones always, I'm still in two minds between the black note and blue though.

I thought the pen would be a gimmick alright but I find myself using it a lot more than I thought I would, good few times a week anyway. Screenshotting is a common one and scribbling notes to myself, occasionally when browsing too...

I use it enough on the 8 that I'll miss it if I ever move to a non-stylus phone.

I’m coming from jet black iPhone plus and really love the look. I don’t think a blue phone with a yellow pen looks right in a professional setting. I’ll wait until I see video of the blue before deciding but think it’s black model all the way for me. I’d hate a contrasting colour s pen on the black model too.

The €800 price from three makes the price fine for me, I can get phones through work at cost price more or less and it’s not much cheaper than that. Three must have got some huge discounts or incentives for that price.

I wouldn’t be too keen to pay 1k for any phone but if apple are charging that much for the iPhone X I don’t see why Samsung can’t do the same for the note. It’s a premium high end phone, the fact that one plus is cheaper is irrelevant to me because it’s not competing with iPhones or Samsung. I’m still undecided if I’m going to pre order but I think I will. I’m bored with iOS and don’t expect the new iPhones to be particularly innovative.

It seems like Three just managed to negotiate a (for many) better deal, get the phone cheaper from Samsung and not offer the bundles like the rest. I wouldn't have minded getting a Galaxy Watch or those high-end AKG headphones others gets around the world, but €150 off is not a bad deal either! :)

Is it difficult at all to unlock a three prepay phone? I am with three at the moment but would like to swap to that good vodafone offer, since I more often than not while travelling can't even use my data on three due to dropping down to edge

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭duckofdeath

I think Three will give you a free unlock code after a year on a pre-pay phone. Before then you'd have to take it to one of those phone shops that root and re-flash them. That's not free though and probably also a breach of your contract with Three. :)

any idea how much if you have to pay

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,658 ✭✭✭✭OldMrBrennan83

You wouldn't really be entering a contract if it was PAYG would you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,883 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

Does the ole 'i'm going on holidays for 6 months to australia can you unlock it' still work?

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭duckofdeath

Most other countries does have a ban on locked PAYG phones, but in Ireland it's still allowed. So, you're technically entering a contract according to their view. I don't know why this haven't changed yet. Anyhoo, the "contract" lets them lock the phone for a year after you've bought it.
I don't know how much those shops charge and I also don't know if there are any risks with it. I'd guess something like 15-20 euros. You can always try and google your phone if it's unlockable online. Some phones does have the feature built right into the firmware.

Probably the only way they can tie people to their crappy network. Definitely worth the €150 for unlocked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,883 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

Ah don't know. I want to move away from them but an extra 150 euro would be a no fookin way for the note 9 for me

Urgh. That would be around €600 if I purchase ex VAT through work. Not sure I have the power to resist.

I'd be happy to take it off your hands at that price haha

Plenty of shops that just get you the unlock code. No voiding of the warranty. I'm on Vodafone and getting the unlock code that evening from the old phone repair shop where I used to work. I can guarantee the codes come directly from Samsung.

How much money does that cost I'd be interested in doing that if I get the note

My launch day / pre pay Note 8 (3) was never locked in the first place.

    You might luck out...

Otherwise, you get can get an unlock code on eBay for about 10-15 euro.

Unlock codes usually on ebay for a tenner and nearly always work

I'm with 48, on the 3 network. Just spent a week in Spain with my brand new shiny S9 Plus. No data roaming no matter what I did. No settings they proposed worked. Common issue it seems.

I'm such a country bumpkin I actually meant travelling in ireland :o I have to toggle aeroplane mode off and on to get back to 4G most of the time

Did 3 never even sort that much out? That crap was going on when I briefly tried them in 2014.

I have absolutely no issues on 3, and currently pay €20/month instead of the €80 I used to pay on Vodafone. The €700+ saved a year goes straight into the phone purchase fund :)

Going to 3 seriously damaged our business until we switched back. Wouldn't consider them even if it was a tenner.

None of the networks are great in this country still in the dark ages, even go over to the UK and see the difference, most masts are all 4G, no investment here. I'm on Vodafone and if you go outside a town or city you'll be lucky to get signal inside a house even in some villages zero signal. Even along some major routes signal can be awful.

    Preorder with 3 placed.

One of my workmates is getting it through Vodafone with a free Samsung Gear S3 classic. Makes it a decent deal, you could easily sell that watch for €200+.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,883 ✭✭✭frozenfrozen

Oh that is interesting. If you could be guaranteed to get 200 quid for it without hassle it's definitely cheaper. But I don't see that offer on their website, is it available to everyone?

edit: by the way I have preordered mine with three.

Regarding the Vodafone offer, I have no idea. My workmate used to work for Vodafone, and he bumped into one of his old workmates who told him about the offer.

Haven't actually verified for myself, as I've gone with 3. Apologies if he has no idea what he's talking about!

No problem, going to more than likely go for three as well just curious.

Yeah, coming from the Note 8. Was actually really happy with it, but the bigger battery was too tempting. Will only have to pay about €150-200 out of my pocket to upgrade, so well worth it imo.

Think I'll purchase this on prepay but I wouldn't touch 3 Ireland with a barge pole, the Indian call centre is an unmitigated nightmare to deal with, get the Note 9 get it unlocked assuming it isn't unlocked in the first place and sell my Note 8.

What's the likelihood that the Three version won't be able to be unlock-able on day 1 and does anyone think that this deal will be available after the 24th? Speculation I know, but previously I've only bought phones from Amazon etc. so I'm not sure how carriers behave in this regard.

I don't know if anyone knows for sure.

I've bought 3 devices from 3 outright. Two were completely unlocked when I got them (HTC 10 and Samsung S6 Edge+) whereas my Note 8 was locked to 3. All were purchased on release date.

The wording of the offer is that you need to preorder to get the €150 off, but then I think I read somewhere else on the site where the wording made it sound like it would continue past.

    Clear as mud :D

Amazon decided to lock my account after i ordered one.

So i threw my hat in with Clove for the 512GB version.

    wish me luck!

  • Registered Users Posts: 88 ✭✭duckofdeath

    Good luck, ChopShop! :)
I did read that there are more people pre-ordering the 512 gigglebyte version than the 128GB, which is a bit crazy? It is not a cheap phone.
I guess their "you can have 1 terabyte in your phone" sales pitch worked.
I'm going for the "cheap" 128GB myself.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 26,658 ✭✭✭✭OldMrBrennan83

They're cute enough with the RAM but I couldn't justify it as I haven't had more than 30GB at any stage on my last three phones. I'm using 23.87GB currently.

Does anyone know if carphone warehouse are doing the same deal as 3 are doing. I was going to order with 3 but id rather do a store pick up and 3 dont seem to offer that. I will be out all day Friday so wont be in for delivery.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,449 ✭✭✭Ivefoundgod

Bit the bullet and pre ordered the black 128gb through three. I’m on honeymoon in Dubai and got to play around with it in one of the malls which sealed the deal. Beautiful phone, massive screen but more or less the same size as my 7 plus. Can’t wait to get back to Android and see what’s new.

I have to say despite my reservations the blue model is class in person. If I could get a matching s pen I probably would have went for it but the yellow s pen is even more off putting in the hand. Lavender version really didn’t look good to me.

I know last year I got my pre-order in late with 3, and had to wait until the Monday. People who had ordered earlier had them on the Friday.

That's simply not true. I'm on Eir formally meteor and never have issues.regular travel to the UK and 4g in big city's is very inconsistent all over the place

To say there is no investment is a lie to say the UK is better is another lie.

Just got an email from three advising me of a delay on my order and an unknown shipping date. Don’t know why I’m even surprised, money gone from my account so can’t even change order to a different provider. The fact they had no problem taking my money earlier only to now say it’s out of stock is a practice that i would really love to know how it’s legal. Anyway hopefully not too long a wait.
