Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

South Africa - Going To The Dogs?

I was out for early dinner this evening with a few friends and there was a work colleague of one of my closest friends present. She was delightful company and is a white South African. Very liberal in her social outlook, we chatted about her country and the reasons she decided to leave.

She told me that when apartheid finally came to an end in the 1990s, many young white South Africans were thrilled and the prospect of a bright, egalitarian new future for SA seemed around the corner.

But flash forward to the 2010s, the country is in total disarray, with rampant corruption, ineptitude, crime, especially violent crime, spiralling out of control. Rapes and murders have apparently been on the sharp increase in the past decade and many Africaaners (like herself) are leaving as they see little hope for their country.

This is very sad. Not only have I her opinion but I've heard it again and again from a number of white South Africans I've met in the past couple of years. They are also rather ashamed that this has happened their country as their youthful hopes for a new South Africa 20 years ago have been smashed.

    Thoughts?

Going down exactly the same route as Zimbabwe with the land grab from white farmers. We all know how things turned out there.

When was it any different ?
I worked with a (white) girl who was born in South Africa and when she was a kid her father was shot dead beside her in a car-jacking.

so the long standing (appalling apartheid) white Anglo/Afrikaans regime was removed and replaced with....what? essentially a new untested elite came in running a bastardised version of the preceding version of administration. Chaos was bound to follow.

What's happening to white farmers in particular is horrific. Overall it's a pitiful country and will probably be a failed state in a decade or two.

imagine people stopped drinking SA wine and tourism based on the treatment of whites...like the apartheid boycotts

Well the geniuses are going to seize the white owned land. That worked out brilliantly in Zimbabwe.

Edit: not sure if you are being serious or not.

It's weird the way SA is going, especially given the way the rest of the continent is such an embodiment of democracy, civil liberties and human rights.

Of course it was so much better in the old days if you had the correct skin pigmentation.

Are you, trying to say it's better now?

No it's worse for most, why though? Because a racist state left 80% of the population impoverished in health, education and jobs and then ended it having not prepared the way forward in any way shape or form. The initial good will was only going to last so long and the guilty white liberals are leaving while the really racist ones are happy to live on in their gated worlds.

We have a great record in the rugby against them, Munster have a lot of South African born players

Find it odd there's so many White people in a continent with so many black culture/countries etc. Always find the South African accent hard to understand and they talk pretty odd

South Africa also have there own country music style with is both odd and catchy

The "guilty white liberals" are fleeing for their lives and should be given refugee status. The "really racists ones" most of whom have actually being born there. Which makes them South African. Why should they be forced out?

And if you mention what happens to the whites in south africa you are labelled a racist, and some people even try to excuse it, saying "but what about".

We all know apartheid was a disgusting system and we all know slavery was disgusting, but if you are not condemning evil from all sides then you are not truly against evil.

According to the government it's just 'robberies gone wrong'. Yep that explains the rape, torture and murder.

My first experience with white South Africans took place much much earlier, early 90's, and was with a much older and less shall we say "rehabilitated"couple. But basically what you describe as a modern present day version of South Africa, they described it pretty much identically to me but only as a "prediction".

Rampant gang rape, race on race is irrelevant, police do nothing either way.

I would never say SA should go back to the way things were, that was simply unconscionable, but when you consider the economy and infrastructure that post inherited from pre apartheid SA, their ability to fcuk it up on a global scale is just spectacular.

I thought I was in two minds about it but the OP's question has clarified it for me perfectly.... I wouldn't want to live in a post apartheid SA any more than I'd want to live in a pre one.

ex-pat White South Africans have been predicting the doom of the country and how terrible it all is and how great it used to be since the mid 90s. It's tiring at this stage.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have never changed. Just the colour swop from those in charge to those treated like ****e.

    This.

The whole of Africa was colonised. Why did white working class people migrate pretty much only to S.A? (French to Algeria is the only other similar one to my knowledge, they all fled post independence) Is it because the climate is more manageable?

Pity that all the economic data is supporting the facts of economic decline under the present government. I am sure you would prefer to believe it is a happy little socialist paradise like Zimbabwe and Venezuela
