Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Live from Estonia it's the first significant game of Madrid's post-Ronaldo era as the two sides from the Spanish capital meet for the Super Cup. How will Julen Lopetegui fare pitting his wits against Diego Simeone?

    Team news:
Real Madrid XI: Navas; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo; Casemiro, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Benzema, Asensio.

Atletico Madrid XI: Oblak; Juanfran, Savic, Godin, Lucas Hernandez; Saul, Koke, Rodri, Lemar; Costa, Griezmann.

Courtois being involved would have been interesting but he's not even on the bench. Two strong sides named here. Keen to see how Lemar gets on.

Bookies have Madrid 4/7 to lift the trophy while Atletico are 5/4.

I see it being close but will go for Atletico to edge it. How do you see the game going?

Dreadful defending but a great finish in the end

Poor all round by Real there. Clueless defending & keeper caught at a tight angle; not for the first time. Can understand not starting Modric after the demanding WC run but think Isco is better suited further up the pitch.

Jasus, Simione has really let himself go over the summer, he could have least have got a haircut

1-1. Benzema header off a Bale cross.

He's up in the stands because of his touchline ban.

    Ah totally forgot about that

I haven't seen rodri before. Is he a youth player?

He was signed from Villarreal. I remember watching him against Lyon in the Europa League last season and he played well even though they lost. Looks like a good bit of business from Simeone.

Penalty to Madrid. Looks like handball.

    Ramos makes it 2-1.

Costa is still a headcase anyways, nothing changed for this season there :pac:

Real given away 2 bad goals tonight. Atletico had very little besides.

Similar to Trezeguet's goal in the Euro 2000 final.

Really enjoyable game, Simeone is some head the ball I'd say

    Two class goals

Another assured finish. Didn't bother with the match but have seen extra time, 2 unbelievably composed/assured finishes. When it comes to getting the players' heads right I don't think there's any other team like it.

Atletico look pretty good. They will be the ones pushing Barca this year.

If Madrid lose by this margin or worse it may prompt them to strengthen their efforts to get somebody before the window closes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭SharpshooterTom

Madrid have been alright in the 90 minutes. Defence has been crap though.

To be fair a striker wouldn't have stopped them conceding 4 goals tonight.

They do need one though, can't believe they're going play Benzema up top on his own who looks more and more like Heskey now with each passing season.

Will Lopetegui be sacked for this?

    I'm not even joking....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Pleased Atletico won and it sets things up for the season nicely. I wasn't expecting Real to make any further signings but it will be interesting to see if this result causes a stir back home and leads to a panic buy.

Zidane's Madrid never let in 4.
Lopetegui's concedes 4 in its first.

    Was Ramos playing? :D

Tbf Juve put 3 past them in 90 mins in Madrid. Atletico got 4 in 120 mins.
Thought they lacked in attack, Asensio in particular. Found their defence got utterly exposed when Casemiro went off.
Why they never replaced Ronaldo baffles me. Too late now to do that.

I read that it’s the first time in history that Atletico’s squad has cost more than Madrid’s, surely Madrid will spend a hundred million or two in the next few weeks.

Bale, Benzema, Isco and Asensio isn’t really a quartet that would strike fear into teams not named SD Huesca or Leganes , Ronaldo compensated for a lot in recent seasons, Bale is also not fit half of the time.

Hazard seems to tick a lot of boxes but he is 7/1 to go to Madrid.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭SharpshooterTom

Hazard isn't a great goalscorer, I know he's an irritating git, but Neymar would be a better fit for Real.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53,262 ✭✭✭✭GavRedKing

Its clear to see that without Ronaldo Real are going to struggle big time in La Liga and the CL, not that it was in any doubt.

Theres no way they'll defend the CL again without him and they're further away now from La Liga success thanks to Atletico keeping Griezmann and adding Lemar to an already very good squad.

You cant lose a player of his caliber and then bring in nobody to replace even half his goals, I felt Benzema was done at Madrid maybe 2 seasons ago, the fact they're going to plow on with him as their main CF for another year tells its own story.

It's the most obvious thing in football to say Madrid without Ronaldo aren't as good. We all knew they wouldn't be.

It'll be the same when Messi leaves Barca too. Those players were once in a lifetime quality, so can't really be replaced. Madrid have now become level again with all the other teams, they have lost their prized asset. And some day barca will too.

They will have to try now to form a better team than the others, rather than be so dependant on one player.

I think its more damning that they've not managed to sign another player from a tier below Ronaldo/Messi given that Ronaldo has gone some 4 weeks ago.

If they go with what they have, they'll be 3rd again, even Valencia were only 3 or 4 pts behind them last year and would fancy their chances of finishing above Real.

    Barca struggling ?
They won the double last season and lost one game all season in the league .
They are the one team that Real still fear .
