The biggest issue is the lag in time from the SSW to any possible impact here, many people expect the models to be throwing up eye candy now. It’s a wait and see game and it could be the game never really kicks off!

A bit like the lyrics to the Paul Brady song.. 'the answer is nobody knows' :)

    And unfortunately 'Nobody' isn't online.

God knows but I don't think he is online either.:P

    https://amp.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/ireland/bitterly-cold-january-ahead-met-eireann-say-894532.html

Is there any broadsheet now that doesn't use click bait.

You read the article and it's clear Met Eireann said the chance of. Also inaccurate crap like the SSW happening now being responsible for the current mild weather... when it hasn't even happened yet!

Some media completely distorted a forecast of Villain's a few days back too, about a certain cloud type, nebulous I think and how they'd lead to colder weather.

Even the GFS just goes to 16 days so the 3 weeks from tmrw is beyond deepest FI.

Hoping for a January cold spell.

The weather today was so mild and humid and gloomy. Met quite a few little spiders too.

    Wishing for frosty blue skies...

Read an interesting article on the guardian about the extended magic mushroom season.

Still going apparently, with no frost to kill the libs, and earlier growing season too.

So in lay man's terms what are people predicting? More of this or more normal temps?
This all means that neither Liverpool or Spurs will win the first premiership despite optimistic signs and Rovers will kick Dundalk and Cork up and down dale and win the title by next October, those Mushrooms sure were magic

Fear not, cold bunnies, Met Éireann insists that there is a bitterly cold January ahead.. at least according to the Irish Examiner:

    EpEWnY6.png

Except that they don't. Contents of the actual article:

"Ireland could be in for another bitterly cold and wintry January with the possible return of the same weather system that caused the Beast from the East this year.

Met Eireann says that the current mild conditions brought on by a sudden stratospheric warming has the potential to be followed by much colder conditions.

The British Met Office says the UK is currently in the middle of what's called a "sudden stratospheric warning".

Met Eireann's Liz Walsh says it's too early to say if we'll get more extreme weather: "Around the atmosphere, you can get deep differences in temperature between cold air coming down from the north and then warm air rising from the south," she said. "You could have very cold air over the US, but warmer air over the Atlantic and then colder air again over Europe or possibly, over Asia."

"The closest comparison we have from our forecasts is the event in 1982,” Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy said at the time.

Temperatures fell as low as -7C at the Bay of Biscay last February.

Apart from the article making absolutely no logical sense, or following in any particular logical order, absolutely nowhere is a 'bitterly cold January' forecast by Met Éireann, but the headline is all that is needed to place the idea that it was in the public consciousness, and should this go all tits up, we will know who will most likely get the blame.

This demonstrates just how dangerously deceptive people in the media really are, and this is not just confined to erroneous weather reporting, but, more dangerously, in all aspects of the shaping of cultural and political narratives.

Wtf. They allegedly said that this mild weather is due to the SSW? ****ing numpties. I see they didn't even put down the name(s) of the "journalists" who wrote this nonsense. As I said, criminal.

It's poor journalism obviously and my advice is to treat the rest of those papers contents with the scepticism they deserve as in the area of weather we're familiar with,we know it's shoite, so there's as good a chance of badly researched shoite elsewhere in the same papers

The criminal part is that the article makes no actual sense. It is all over the place with the one or two sentence paragraphs having no relationship or connection with any other. And then, we get a little pointless quote from a fecking housing minister to conclude.

The only thing each little paragraph have in common is that none of them justify such an misleading and libellous headline.

Why won't Met Eireann call them out on this? A few words from them would be enough to expose these cretins for what they are.

All it would take would be a few seconds at the start of their TV broadcast distancing themselves from such articles. Well worth it imo.

Off topic ,but the clickbaiting style by Breakingnews.ie has spread to the Examiner and not just their online articles. Much of their 'journalism' is pathetic leaks, agendas and, overall, poorly written horse-sh1t.

Lots of grounds for a complaint lately if people were bothered. And that's just the weather.

Was in the city yesterday and you're right re dampness, greyness and throw in extreme mildness. Horrible. While it's just as clammy and unseasonal next door here in Kerry, at least it's much brighter.

Wheel out the most articulate big gun..probably Evelyn or Jean. State what newspapers and online media are saying. State some are wholly inaccurate e.g. the SSW which hasn;t happened resulting in the current mild spell.

I actually think they are slow in not refuting all the BS..

Needs to be more specific now about nespapers and online media as people, in general, trust old broadsheets like The Examiner.

Was talking to the wife and we both noticed we haven't had the heating on since before Xmas, couldn't believe how mild it has been.

Another grey cloudy day here to end 2018. Not a glimpse of sunshine here since 21st December but at least the misty drizzly conditions of much of last week are gone.

It's the first day of the spell that you could consider decent down here, glimpses of blue sky and the ground is drying out finally. The lawn is getting a skim today for sure :D it hasn't stopped growing yet this year.
