Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Say something nice about RTE

RTE S late late show in the 60s,70s was an awakening for Ireland culturally. They weren't afraid to tackle taboo topics which was unheard of at the time. Homosexuality, Contraception, Religion. Nothing was off limits

Referring to Gay Byrne, Bishop of Galway Michael Browne called him "a purveyor of filth" after he asked a woman what colour nightie she wore on her wedding night.

Their sports coverage is almost adequate, and some of their presenters are probably worth a fraction of the money they're on.

Oh, and I first saw Alien on TG4. Dunno what it has to do with Irish, but it's a damned fine movie.

    At least they are consistent.

    Consistently bad with their programming.
Consistently bad with their ultra-liberal presenter/reporter bias on social and political topics.
Consistently bad for overpaying their "talent".
Consistently bad in advocating for ever-increasing TV license fees (tax).

And that's all the nice things that I have to say about RTE.

I like it. I watch about 50 hours TV a week and a good 60-70% would be RTÉ.

Here we go with the RTE bashing.

No doubt lots of people will say that they never watch RTE.

So they never watch the Irish news, weather, any sports match etc.

I think the do a decent job, do some great documentaries in relation to Ireland.

The recent programmes by Charlie Bird, "After the headlines" has been a good watch as an example.

The one thing that annoys me in the station is the catholic bias.
Still doing the Angelus and falling over themselves with the Pope's visit this week.

Even 5 minutes ago they sent out an iOS app notification that the "Pope is excited to be coming back to Ireland", that is not news and worthy of a news flash.

Almost never. Haven't seen a single second of RTE broadcasting for years besides whichever match is being shown in a pub when I'm there. Does that count when I'm not watching it?

Used to like Reeling in the Years though, nice nostalgia bombs.

I mean After Hours is better for news really, and the weather forum is way better for weather.

As for sports, other than GAA, I'd imagine theres nothing you'll have on RTE that would be exclusive.

You rely on After Hours for the news? Bloody hell!

As for weather, so you didn't watch RTE news or weather during the snow in February or Storm Ophela?

As for sports, they have Ireland football matches and used to have the 6 nations.

Also, showed the recent hockey World Cup games.

I would also prefer to watch Irish coverage rather than English coverage of Irish team events.

But ran for much longer and had a much bigger Irish focus so more relevant to an Irish audience.
TV stations copy each other all the time, including BBC. Not a rip-off they buy and sell the rights and concepts.

Their news and current affairs programming can be quite good sometimes as is their sports coverage.

    Reeling in the Years

Interestingly enough they are covering the 1970’s these last few weeks.

They were due to show the 1975 episode last night but instead showed a Gay Byrne Compilation programme.

So we had to wait til this evening for 1975.

The knock on effect of that is on Friday evening they will be showing 1978 instead of 1979 (the year of the visit of Papal visit of John Paul II).

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was an editorial decision to not show the 1979 episode before the visit at the weekend.

MT Cranium is more accurate and informative than RTE, as are several of the posters on the weather forum.

    murpho999 wrote:

After Hours, Politics forum, recently updated threads on the front page, Reddit World news and what they're linking to and BBC site.

RTE isn't a great source of news tbh. Sure, look at the one with the 7 kids and the coverage for her.

Used to have is good. Also, why would I want to torture myself and watch Irish games.

    So, did BT.

I'd rather watch the better coverage whichever that is. Find it better to watch the least biased one too. Commentary doesn't tend to be as annoying imo.

Their news and current affairs programming is top class.

Their sports coverage is also brilliant but the amount of sports rights they have lost over the last number of years makes me worry if they will have anything left 5 years from now.

You’ve probably also got 10+ news alerts over last few weeks referring to “upcoming travel chaos” or the sexual abuse reports from Pennsylvania.

The media coverage has been overwhelmingly negative.

From my point of view there seems to be a concerted effort to discourage as many people as possible from attending.

I honestly cannot think of one redeeming thing about RTE. If they wish to persist with charging us for a license, it should be cut back to one tv channel showing news and current affairs and perhaps the odd documentary and maybe two radio channels - one for music (covering all genres with an audience) and one for news.

Tell the overpaid, freeloading gimps that the max salary on offer will be €100k - €150k and if they don’t wish to avail of same they can take their “talents” elsewhere if they feel they can do better.

Otherwise it should become a subscription service and those who want to pay for it are welcome to do so.

The Margaret Cash reporting (or lack of) is the final straw. Their mishandling of public and taxpayers funds is an utter scandal.
