Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. True Romance

I posted a thread about Chick Flicks ages ago and mentioned Dirty Dancing.

Tbh I don't really see Dirty Dancing as a "Chick Flick" mainly because I suppose I think the film had a lot of depth and the characters were more authentic than you'd usually apply to a so called "chick flick"! And a lot of lads I know do openly appreciate the film.

In the previous thread I'd raised, afaik Top Gun and Cocktail were never mentioned? I guess because they are not seen as "chick flicks" but any "chick" I know loves them :)

I personally loved True Romance, I guess the antithesis of a chick flick? and consciously made that way perhaps? I always thought of Terminator 1 as a love story between Sarah Connor and Reece Kyle.

So what are your favourite love stories that aren't "Chick Flicks" through books or film or anything?

I suppose the classic answer would be Romeo and Juliet. Maybe Wuthering Heights if I hadn't had to endure it for two years and a leaving cert exam. Also enjoyed Ghost many moons ago, but not sure if it would be classed as "not a chick flick".

The love stories that have a dark setting (DON'T say Twilight) and don't end happily ever after or tie up every loose end would be of more appeal to "non-chicks".

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I love Streets Of Fire. The music alone makes it unmissable.

I love Wuthering Heights. It's one of my favourite books and stories.

I never watched the Twilight thing. I'm a fan of vampire films and when I originally heard of Twighlight I thought 'yes' but watched 5 minutes of it :/ and turned it off!!

I was expecting maybe something like Micheal and Star from The Lost Boys but it didn't even come close..

    (500) Days of Summer would be in this category for me. It was released with the tagline "This is not a love story, this is a story about love." and I think it has more depth and bittersweetness (totally a really word, fúck off Spellcheck!) than a standard chick-flick. Even a few years after watching it I've read different perspectives on the film that have made me question how I reacted first time I saw it (which, to be fair, was the day after I'd been dumped and also my birthday. :( )
First time watching it, I felt really bad for Tom and felt like Summer was this selfish person who led him on. In hindsight, Summer really doesn't do anything wrong, and perhaps Tom is just immature and expected too much from her.

Also I quite like the fan theory that
Tom's sister was actually only slightly younger than him, but she's a child in the movie because it's how he still sees her
    .

I'd agree with True Romance. And yes it was consciously made that way (the original QT script had a very different ending which would have been complete f**k you to the audience).

Disco Pigs is a film about well maybe not love but obsession or possession but I still really like it.

True Romance is one of my all time favourites. One of the best scenes in film is the Sicilian scene with Denis Hopper.

My favourite part in that whole movie is the engine room. Engine porn! :p From 1:15 onwards.

Read that "Henry Hill" didn't actually have the access to get in behind the bar irl but it is an iconic scene in the film..

Romeo and Juliet is not a love story. It's a 3 day relationship between a 13 year old and a 17 year old that caused 6 deaths.

+1 for Terminator and True Romance. I'm not very big on romantic stories but those movies were great.

Fight Club. An epic tale of the love a man has for his below average sized penis. And his imaginary girlfriend.

Despite being of that age group, I've never watched Dirty Dancing or Top Gun. No interest.

When someone says "nobody puts baby in a corner" it makes me cringe.

One of the great love stories I've watched over the last few years has to be Brokeback Mountain.

Fantastic acting from all involved, amazing landscapes, it felt like you were there.

The scene at the end when all Elmer has left are the 2 shirts, is heartbreaking.

    Heath Ledger, gone too soon.

Interestingly, the actor discussed the issue of
    who was in the wrong
just the other day. (And you were right the second time.) I can't insert the link without it embedding the damn tweet which is a spoiler, but you can read it here:

A Streetcar named Desire is a love story. It's not a positive or healthy love, but it's definitely a love story.

Clarence actually died and Alabama hooked up with Mr Brown - in the QT script and world, but they changed the ending. This becomes a little strange when put in the context of Clarence and Alabama being the masculine and feminine sides of QT's personality - which I seem to remember him saying in an interview. Great film anyway. We used the theme in our wedding.

Oliver Stone? Surely you mean Tony Scott.

Yes, Summer did nothing wrong in 500 days of summer, nevertheless I didn’t really like the movie.

If you like love stories that don’t necessarily work out La La Land is a better bet.

The princess bride. It flopped at the cinema because no-one knew how to market it. Was it a kids movie, a romance, an adventure, a fantasy, a comedy?
But it manages to be all of them and be a really great movie.

12 Monkeys is a love story that I wouldn't consider a chick flick (there again, my sister is a chick and she loves Gilliam).
