Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Literally everybody always talks about how they 'look bad in pictures or webcam' but I look good in both, and so bad irl. I think it's because I'm so used to seeing my actual reflection at this point that the mirror view is actually odd for me.

    Anybody know this feel?

GF took a selfie of us last new years with a beauty filter on. Every time I look at the photo I think "We don't look like that".

    Literally hyperbole.

Anyway I do Skype and other formats a lot for work and when I work from home there’s an angle where I am a hottie. The camera is above me.

At work the camera is often below us in a room, we tend to stand up, so I have to say that I don’t have the prettiest nostrils.

    None of yez do.

I've been told a good few times that I look better in real life than I do in pictures. I suppose it's better than the reverse, I dunno.

I don't understand how anyone can say they look better in photos than in real life, somehow the camera seems to deduct several dozen points from my IQ score and drop me in the "complete eejit" category :D

You look ok. A bit like the younger Morrissey. Maybe don’t look so glum?

When you look at photos of yourself with other people do you think “everyone looks crap. They are all so much better in real life” or “everybody looks good except me, I look so much better in real life”.

If you look enough a lot of people do look worse, especially when it's an up close drunk pic. It's just you don't care enough to examine the differences.

Myself, I look good in pics and video recordings, something about the lighting is so good for my symmetry but in real life it isn't like that.

That would be more typical the camera doesn’t lie but then I suppose a still can remind us what we probably should work on appearance wise. Short of facial surgery that is, and I look like a goofy kid a lot of of the time with a facial structure which belies my age and so I can’t match up what I see with how I feel

..which takes me into BDD territory and I’d be weary of selfie culture with the phones it can leave people with debilitating issues. No real sympathy for the cases who obviously feel they aren’t quite perfect enough though, and sure enough arent shy about taking it to the media they do the condition a disservice!

Personally, with a few exceptions, I find most people look far better in person than in photos. I have a few friends who are ridiculously photogenic but I find the vast majority of people to look far better in person and I absolutely include myself in that. I'm not one of those "ugh, don't take photos of me!" people on a night out, but I'm not expecting to look back over them and not have The Fear amplified exponentially :D

The funny thing is, given the always-on digital world we're living in at the moment, I can totally see why some people would - if they had to choose - actually prefer to look great online and awful in person than the other way around :D:D:D

I suspect that the camera view IS the real life view.

And when you look in the mirror it's flipped around and not true to irl and what you see in the mirror is the reverse of what people see when they look at you.

I look better in the mirror than in photos.

I'm an the verge of getting into photography. By getting into I mean how to use the damn thing besides setting it to auto. Trying to figure out the exposure triangle etc.

I'd say a good photographer would make most of us look good by accentuating the positives.

First they came for the socialists...

  • Registered Users Posts: 443 ✭✭DaeryssaOne

Agree with Chakotha to a point, you only see how other people see you in real life in a picture as mirrors are inverting your image so what you're used to seeing of yourself isn't what everybody else sees.

I would say the mixture of makeup and flash photography can cause girls to look pretty different on camera though. I can think of two friends who are both gorgeous in real life and whatever way their faces are structured mixed with whatever makeup they wear - the camera always makes them look completely different - paler skin, flatter faces etc. Not that they're minging in photos or anything but they are miles better looking in the flesh. Another friend is unbelievably photogenic and always looks striking in a photo no matter what - I think some faces are better suited to the lighting / angles of a camera.
