    short review of our w/e:

I went last year and had an amazing time.

This year, I brought the caravan in on Thursday night. No hassle, camped up in minutes.

I left the site Friday 12:00 to pick up my SO in Dungarvan. We were having a drink at 2pm at the van. No hassle.

    Good bits:
    • The new route from campervans to the main arena is a huge improvement.
    • The revised main arena area is easier to get around and better space up there than last year.
    • The music. For me personally, this is the best lineup of any Irish festival this year.
    • Highlights were Jose Gonzalez, black midi (best set of the w/e imho), The National (not a huge fan but blew me away), Kiasmos, Nenah Cherry, Moodyman, Father John Misty (I find his albums quite dull, but loved this performance), John Grant, Kamaal Williams.
    • Food was pretty good. Fish and chips beside Eddie Rockets was lovely until Sunday when the fish fillet changed to this frozen block. Was still nice and they really apologetic about it. Halloumi fries also excellent.
    • Crowd. What a lovely bunch of people. Always felt safe. Some great craic with the random chats. Top notch.

Not so good bits (not mentioning the traffic as we had no issues in or out):
    • The state of the urinals from Saturday evening onwards.
    • Really missed the stuff on the lawn in front of the house. Was a highlight last year and this year was let down by its absence.
    • The sound in the Something Kind of Wonderful stage. Was brutal for Anna Calvi (couldn't hear one word of what she sang) The sound really let her down. The noise bleed in there for Olafur Arnalds was awful. I also heard the sound was terrible for Lisa Hannigan (I wasn't there). Road to Nowhere sound was way better over the whole w/e.

Overall, not as good as last year, but still a great weekend.

If last year was a 10, this year was an 8.5

Great review. Makes me consider it next year alongside feedback from friends and family.

And i fully agree re the lineup. EP would need some significant additions in the next few announcements to better it.

Hopefully! Slightly worried that they haven't announced their loyalty tickets for next year yet.

I suspect we have reached a point where the current scenario (high prices for insurance, services and staff, bands demanding a larger slice of the pie, ticket prices being more or less at a maximum) makes it very difficult for small free flow festivals to turn a profit.

My suspicions re: ATN are that they made a loss last year and tried to make a profit this year but found themselves very squeezed. Rather than cut back on music, they tightened up on other things and increased the ticket prices. Regarding B&S, I think the recession meant that a lot of really good bands were willing to play for small money, but now that people are back to paying €100+ for tickets to the Three Arena. Rather than cut back on other things or raise the ticket prices, the lineup suffered.

When do they usually announce loyalty tickets?

Hopefully B&S goes ahead - It might come back rejigged and smaller next year. Either way, I will definitely go.

If anyone hears anything about B&S 2020, could you please let us know?

ATN just reminded me why it is so special !

But it's the depth, lads, the depth. I do a little playlist of stuff I might like to see when I start researching for a festival, just a single track at the start. I had maybe 13 or 14 for Alltogethernow, I have 25 this morning for EP without even thinking. Everyone who has done a review of last weekend will have 7 or 8 acts they really enjoyed with some absolute belters. I know I'll be able to watch music I enjoy ALL weekend in Stradbally and still miss a tonne of stuff.

I was in Curraghmore with friends and family so you're socialising too but from a music point of view, there's still no comparison. EP by a mile.

Agree re the depth and sheer variety at EP. But ATN wins regarding the consistency of good acts. Nothing there I'd be unhappy seeing on a lineup and many acts I wished EP had grabbed.

Having said that I opted for EP for the exact same reasons you've given Stillill.

Size for size, ATN bookings hit more winners than EP does this year. A mediocre Glastonbury will beat both hands down, just on breadth. I’ll be at EP and find more than enough to keep me happy, but that doesn’t mean I think their curatorial game is better than ATN’s. It’s not.

Agreed massive open urinal area with 4 urinals that have 4 spaces each. Fine during the day but not at night. Looks like they cheaped out getting enough and they were full and overflowing too meaning you could get piss on your boots.

Get a trough if you are too cheap for these fancy new ones and drain into a big tank. Not rocket science.

Actually one thing not missed from last year was the smell of piss when twas hot. Having the tank in the pisser is a bad design IMO

Look, I'm just talking about my musical experience at each. For 165 yoyos at EP, I'm getting 3 solid days of great music. I'm paying 30 quid extra at ATN and dealing with plenty of gaps. I'm not slagging ATN off, far from it. I've had 2 great years there and seen lots of good gigs. The good the Bad and the Queen were, I think the best festival gig of my life. However, I'm at EP on my own and I'd spend a Saturday shuffling from the Skatellites at 11 in the morning at the Salty Dog from one gig to the next pretty much all day until 2 in the morning. There's ALWAYS something to see. If I was at the same craic at ATN, I'd struggle to fill my day. Different festivals, room for both, just talking about my experience.

Would throwing down some sawdust or wood chipping throughout the event help too?

Mixed feelings about ATN, think it'd take a really strong line up to bring me back. Esp as everyone raved about it so much from last year.

Traffic doesn't anything more said. Logistics and set up was lacking. Tangerine fields was crazy, I emailed them about it from the queue, felt like the people on the group were doing the best they could, staying friendly and apologising, but whoever was behind it messed up massively. I was emailed back telling me there was 35 people on the ground and it was just because everyone came at once (???), not due to them having one person in reception confirming details on the phone. Have never had an issue with any other company. Even the guy working there said he hadn't seen anything like it in 5 years. I heard people who got delayed by the traffic didn't even get to their tents the first night as the reception had closed?

Showers were lacking, they could have done with more and cleaner toilets, more food vendors (17 blips for a pizza is crazy, the big blue bus at KS would be 12 for something like that, ATN must be extortionate for the pitches.

Sound was bad for Bitch Falcon unfort. KKC were great, and George Fitz, Just Mustard too, The Good the Bad and the Queen was something different altogether, still trying to get my head about that show as I knew nothing about them, seemed like so much was ad libbed and off the cuff but it fell into place so well that it obv wasn't. Damon Albarn was a genius puppet master, never seen someone have so much fun on stage. I found Murder Capital's on stage presence just embarrassing to watch, seems like a waste of talented musicians. DC Fountains looked burnt out. that they're trying way too hard to be something they're not, it's clearly so not natural, it's just cringe watching them lighting up each others smokes, handing around the bottle, they're from Skerries, c'mon, give it up. It's so far from 'Too Real'.

One thing that was really unique, was the light installation on one of the tress that looked like a light straight on, but had a message if turned your head looking at it. Never seen anything like that.

edit: also, felt pretty bad for the young guy trying to direct traffic out of the Red Cark Park on Monday, he was getting torrents abuse from people getting out their cars, there was nothing he could do about the small lane way out, the festival balls up there, he shouldn't have been taking that ire.

that sounds really cool - where was that? any pics? what was the message? missed that.

Not raining on your parade at all. It’s just you’re always going to have more choice with bigger scale. I did ATN alone last year, with a lighter music roster, and never felt there wasn’t something to see. I’ll be doing EP alone this year, and, seriously uninteresting headline acts aside, I’ll be spoiled for choice - but with a greater ratio of chaff to wheat, act-wise. It’ll cost me less, but i’ll be taking my chances with the longer treks for slightly less chance of camping neighbour idiocy, and probably failing in that gamble (I missed the eco camping boat). Security check delays too. The messiness warrants a discount.

    Agree fully bar The Strokes.

And you should pick up an eco-camping ticket quite easily by asking on boards. I gave away one last year and others were offering them around.

I saw it by a path through a wooded area parallel to the path to global roots stage. I was sitting on a bench near it and spotted people shaking their heads while staring at the trees. Thought they were off their heads. Then more people came along, and I thought there was some Blair witch sh!té going on.

Had a look then and spotted it. Was cool! There was an image of a smiley face and some other message about love. I wonder how the hell people knew to start shaking their heads while looking at it??

How did Galway people find the drive down? Via limerick I guess and cross country? Lack of a motorway straight there is a bit off putting.
A few of us had planned ATN next year instead of EP so just weighing up all the factors.

Left Galway, went via Limerick, Tipperary, Clonmel. As I was looking for the Red Gate, I did not go anywhere near Carrick-on-Suir. Took the R676 and R678 via Clonea Power and straight to the Red Gate where there was no, and I mean not another vehicle on that route when I reached the Red Gate - no queues.

Unfortunately, a lot of people who were in the horrendous festival traffic and who were actually destined in for the Red Gate, found themselves in the queue for the Blue Gate coming out of Carrick, which then eventually served the Red Gate also via the R677. The wrong way to do it, which is quite obvious looking at a map. Still the organisers should have had the signs.

    Hi All,

I haven't posted here before but have just been checking numerous places where people are talking about ATN and thought this might be worthwhile. As soon as I got into the camping area on Friday evening (after the 6 hour traffic and hill trek with all the stuff of course!) I lay my tent flat on the ground with my rucksack, turned around to help my friends with their tent before we made a joint attempt at mine (they were standing less than a metre from me) and when I turned back to my tent my entire rucksack with all of my clothes, shoes, makeup, mattress pump etc. was taken.

No steward in the campsite (general this must be the place campsite) was able to tell me if/where there was a lost and found, I tried at least 10 people for this information including going back to the entrance and checking with staff there, when I finally found the Info point I was given a lollipop and told not to let it ruin the festival!! At first I thought somebody mistakenly may have taken it thinking it belonged to a person in their group but I know the same thing happened to at least 4 others from meeting people during my various trips to the very unhelpful Info point over the weekend. I have been to a number of festivals here and abroad and have never worried about items such as clothing being stolen before, I was completely shocked by this ATN and would say there definitely was some kind of element of scum present at the festival and it really did put such a dampener on the weekend for me, I was quite wary of those around after that point.

I've since received the lost and found email for POD but not too hopeful of getting my stuff back at this point, on the off chance any of you do hear of anybody that found a lot of female clothing/rucksack please let me know!

    Thanks!

I think this could be a good option in future. Arrive Thursday night in a camper. Chill out. No rushing around. Get set up well in advance. Have an early night, ready to explore in the morning.

You're thinking of The Good, The Bad and The Queen.
