Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A 20+ 5month year old can't even get into a bar/club in the US. Any ideas where he might get a fake Irish ID to get him over the next few months?

They’ll only accept passports anyway. Just drink at home and parties, that was the best part of J1. It’s also seems to be tradition for irish students to thrash your accommodation so bad that it gets in the local news.

    A 20+ 5month year old walked into a bar.
    "Why the long face?"

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Get friendly with the barman, there's J1s boozing away. Depends on where you are obviously.
They seem to ID almost everyone but very rarely do I see them look at the actual ID. Good luck getting someone to give you their passport though.

I'm picturing a 20 year old and a baby, no wonder he's not getting served!:D

Sure why would a bar serve 20+ 5 month olds? Would they even have 20+ high chairs for them?

Agreed. The house parties, beach parties and outdoor raves/parties are far better than the bar scene anyway, and you'll meet better people too.

I found many of the US bars to attract the more argumentative/aggressive types. Far too easy to meet some retired or active military types intent on showing their strength, especially if you've been talking to some women.

Saying that, go to the "Irish" bars. Not the tacky commercial Irish bars, but the ones which are more like clubs or associations, and your age won't really be noticed if you have a quiet word with the management. Clear the air, and they'll recommend places for you to go, or invite you to events where your age won't be an issue.

The US can be a lot of fun... Although, again, I wouldn't particularly recommend the general bar scene. It gets much better once you're older and enter the more professional/singles bars... but at your age, the college parties are loads of fun. Very different to here or Europe. A word of warning though... Drugs have a much stronger presence, and the attitude is often a bit weird compared to Ireland. Be very careful who you choose to get high with.

Getting paraplegic on $7 boxes of wine and Four Loko at a house were the best parts of my J1s. Tell him to do that.

What part of "over 21s only" needs explaining?

Underage drinking is taken very seriously in the US. Anyone found to have served alcohol to a minor can face a substantial fine of several thousand dollars. He or she may also be found guilty of a misdemeanor offense that carries a sentence up to one year in state prison.

In addition, the establishment that admitted the individual may lose its liquor license, which could result in the business closing down and everyone who works there losing their job.

So your friend's fake ID could wind up costing innocent people a lot.

Tell him to cop on and stay in Ireland if he wants to drink at the age of 20.

if they took gun control only a fraction as seriously, they wouldn't have mass shootings every other week.

Rubbish. Simplistic thinking to a complicated problem. Guns are part of American culture for a large % of Americans, and young people will still have access (permitted or otherwise) to their parents or family weapons.

We just stab and shoot each other to death just fine in Ireland. Who needs gun control?

The difference is that gun ownership is legal in America whether one likes it or not.

The issue is some 20 year old cant get through a night out without booze and is prepared to risk a criminal record in the process of trying to get trashed.

Perhaps we should examine this before going off on the second amendment

Yes, so whilst people will say "oooh, it's sooo complicated" and "from my cold dead hands!", things will continue as they are and get worse.
The argument being "you can't just throw legislation at it, it'll never change" and all the other lame bollocks.
Meanwhile alcohol control in the US is "We Will Come Down Upon You Like a Ton of Bricks!" and lo and behold, zealous enforcement magically works all of a sudden, so what is it?
it's a lack of will to want to change, so the hand-wringing and thoughts and prayers will continue. To me that is a form of disrespect for the victims.
It says "we don't care enough about children getting shot to actually try to really change things".
Gun advocates and everyone saying "gun control is simplistic" might as well walk up to the graves of the victims and piss on them.
They are disgsuting pieces of sh*t for it.
Because they care more for guns than for kids and there is NO argument about that and I don't care for the fcuking whinging of the gun lobby.

I wonder what would happen to a porn producer who featured a girl aged 17 years and 5 months in one of his movies.

I don't think "But ... but ... but she was almost 18" would cut it in court when he's facing charges of producing child pornography.

Nice passionate rant. Perhaps you should wipe the drool from your chin.

However, your statement was simplistic not the overall issue of gun control.

No argument? I Guess not when you essentially state that there is no compromise possible in your mind. So very realistic and practical. You're a perfect example of why gun control won't effectively be reformed because you represent the people who won't accommodate the gun owners even slightly.

Your way or the high way.

Your way or the high way.

And "from my cold dead hands" translates as "I am open to compromise"?
This may surprise you, but so far the pro gun lobby hasn't exactly shown themselves to be willing to be flexible.
Their stance has always been 2nd amendment, no discussion, piss off.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/nra-national-rifle-association-history-gun-control-second-amendment-oliver-north-a8483946.html
NRA spokespeople like Dana Loesch routinely appear on TV in the aftermath of mass shootings to insist that the real enemy is the pernicious influence of the entertainment industry and that the solution is the sale of more guns, not fewer.
Since the turn of the millennium the organisation has continued to fight aggressively for its interests, battling a federal handgun ban in the Supreme Court in 2008 and blocking congressional efforts to pass tighter background check amendments in 2013 despite a 91 per cent approval rating for the measure in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Oh yes, that really sounds like being willing to compromise.

At this stage it has to be surmised that anyone who isn't onboard with gun control will never be on board no matter what and they have to be contained and walled off.

OK, I think this needs it's own thread...

Not really. It's an American issue rather than a global one. We're so far removed from the culture, and the experience to make our opinions inappropriate..

It's like Americans who believe they understand the ins and outs of the IRA/Loyalists and feel that they can settle the issue based on their own experience and opinions.

I've been part of such threads before and they go nowhere with lots of passionate statements but little logical/practical or realistic thinking. Nah. Not again.
