Loud as fnck and annoying Pacino is just annoying.

Id still put Dog Day amongst his best though, the manic portrayal of the character totally served the story. Scarface too since he is coked off his head most of the time. Getting the Oscar for shouting continuously in Scent of A Woman was a turning point in his career and a well he has returned to often ever since.

Godfather movies (even the third one) and Dog Day Afternoon he was brilliant. Shouty Pacino, meh. Liked the scene in Heat when he took his telly back. That was good shouty.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Just way too sensationalised, the story itself would've been fine.
The Hangover - Only saw the first one, it has its moments but people made it out to be the greatest thing ever at the time.

I don’t get the Cruise hatred really, he’s perfectly fine in Jack Reacher/ Mission Impossible in my book.

They arent even in the same league as each other, watch or read any of Spielbergs thoughts on Kubrick to confirm this.

The truth is Spielberg is a far superior director who learned a lot from Kubrick

    Withnail and I
    The Big Lebowski
Sure was - love that film.

The Big Lebowski really did not do it for me - but I may revisit.

When it comes to writing film dialogue there's nobody on the planet better than Tarrantino. I've watched Pulp fiction about 100 times and will watch it another 50 times before I die, it really is that good. Samuel L Jackson has been in plenty of bad films and gets away with all these due to how amazing he is in this 1 film. Django unchained is excellent and Kill Bill vol 1 is a masterpiece, the 1 person v 80people fight at the end is the greatest martial arts scene of all time.

I only watch a QT movie if I want to listen to verbal diarrhea. The man firmly believes in the use of 10 words when one would do.

Not only is Star Wars nonsense, it completely ripped off Flash Gordon.

    swripoff-flash.jpg

That was kind of deliberate. George Lucas tried to buy the rights to Flash Gordon in the 1970s. When he failed to do so he created Star Wars.

He’s a reliable indicator of a good enough blockbuster movie, even though he’s not the greatest actor, he’s good enough.

It’s hes in something it’s often good though. I popped into edge of tomorrow (live die repeat) thinking it was likely to be good because cruise gets good scripts, and it was. Otherwise I knew nothing about it.

'The Green Mile' - in my opinion it was kind of like a dumber version of Shawshank Redemption

'The Post' - I'll admit I never saw it!

    '12 Years a Slave'

'The God Father' - what the actual fcuk is all the fuss over

You're absolutely right about 12 Years a Slave. Utter rubbish.

And green mile is Meh, too. Like you I haven't seen the Post.

The Godfather is an utter classic though. :)

There are some films that are objectively bad.

There are some films that I like but I understand why others don't like them. I get it why someone wouldn't like Whitnail and I or The Big Lebowski. They're oddball offbeat comedies (sometimes dark comedies). You'd have to be in a particular mood, for one.

But if you're disliking The Godfather you're pretty much disliking the entire genre of gangster movies, which probably means you didn't have much reason to be looking at it in the first place!

There Will Be Blood I found great until I realised it was going nowhere. Bastard in a basket. Bastard in a basket. Bastard in a basket. I get it, he's a bad, hollow person. I am drinking your milkshake. Oh **** off.

I also found Shrek vastly over-rated. It's meant to be a parody? Shame it's not a good one. People seemed to agree with me with Shrek 2, 3, 4 , 508, but honestly I'd put them all at the same level of quality.
    He ripped off Flash Gordon.

Star Wars (IV) is a good sci-fi fantasy flick that's a little flabby in the middle. Flash Gordon is a camp, glitzy sci-fi that is mainly remembered for the Queen theme song.

I presume he is talking about the original B/W Flash Gordon series. The Flash Gordon movie with the Queen soundtrack came out in 1980, 3 years after the first Star Wars movie.

Yep excellent movie. The only colour used was the red coat on the little girl that eventually got killed. Genius.

The only spoken word in Mel Brook's 'Silent Movie' was uttered by mime artist Marcel Marceau, now that's genius.
Better film than 'Schindler's List' in my opinion......well certainly funnier.... with far more jokes.

The action was often poorly choreographed, the CGI was really poor and wobbly for a $200m film, the villain was underdeveloped and underused (not an unusual thing for a Marvel film, but they didn't do it any better).

On its own merits it's probably in the lower third of Marvel films. It was a big deal because of the subject matter and associated race issues - ie a big hollywood blockbuster that features a predominately black cast abd touches on issues like colonialism, but that was largely window dressing.

I get why such a step for mainstream, profit-centric and risk-averse film was well received, but it was a reaaaalllllyyy small step, and on a technical level, wasn't particularly good.

That said, it absolutely wasn't terrible or anything either, and had a lot of good qualities as well. Well cast, mostly well acted (although I don't really rate Boseman), the bits with Killmonger were good (there just weren't enough), music, worldbuilding and such were well executed.

Yes but saying "I want you to a scougher the earth for that mother**cker, if Butch goes to indochina I was a n**ger in a bowl of rice ready to pop a cap in his ass" is miles better than saying make sure you find him and Kill him

I don't really get angry with films in a Mark Kermode Sex And The City 2/Entourage kind of way but that changed when I saw Swiss Army Man. With every passing minute I was getting more and more angry and gave up and walked out at about the 50 min mark. I'm not sure if we're "supposed to say we like it" but I remember it getting a few decent reviews at the time. Mind bogglingly awful.

Okay, I will take up that challenge! It is one of the first films to explore the impacts of vietnam on the US soldiers(PTSD) and American society. It had a brilliant core group of young actors for whom this film made them stars - De Niro, Streep, Walken, Cazale.
The wedding scene may be over long but it is also a fantastic celebration of youth, family and relationships in a small town in Nowhere USA - whose innocence was about to be destroyed by the war.
The war and torture scenes are visceral and gut wrenching. The russian roulette scene is tragic and shows the American viewer 'this is what we do to our young men when we send them off to fight in foreign lands and then scorn them for fighting'.
A brilliant score, and rich cinematography. Nothing out of Hollywood in the last 10 years comes anywhere close.
    A masterpiece.
