How long before Paperback version of book will be released.

General question but I was in Easons yesterday looking to buy both The Woman in the Window and Stephen Kings the Outsider but both are only available as hardback (and quite sizable ones at that), how log does it take before a book will be released in a paperback version as I hate reading oversized hardback versions of any book as it's impossible to read on the bus with them being so oversized.
