Not really I have driven many times around those area's over the last few years
and most repossession's of the bust have been hoovered up.

    To name a few

    Shannon, Quays rooskey
    Millbrook ,Dromod
    Priors Point, Carrick on Shannon
Even rivermeadows in Dromod are being snapped up.

The appeal is for an upmarket feel over surroundind estates in the town as its
on a 5 star resort not that she is posh Haha!

There are hundreds of houses that were bought & left empty as there was some tax incentive for buying in certain areas.
There are not repossessions, the people that bought them never cared if anyone lived in them or not.

I'm not so sure that houses thrown up in the countryside of leitrim, longford & roscommon to avail of tax incentives could ever be considered 'upmarket '
From what I hear, the houses are no more fancy than any one off build anywhere in the county

Just had a quick look on myhome, there are 4 bed detached houses in dromod asking less than 200k.
Way better location, right on train line.
Also a nice 3 bed on its on in the country in annaduff, halfway between dromod & Carrick for just over 100k. Could easily have a bit of work done to it.

Edit, rooskey is closer to dromod & train, Good value there too.

4 bed detached of similiar spec are around 270-300k in Dromod & Carrick in the villages anything else are usually auctions priced low or old homes several miles away.
Desireable area's come at a premium and most of these towns are accessible
within 20 min drive of the N4.

I live in Mohill town at the min and it felt pretty dead here when I first came last year but actually there's plenty to do if you look around. Lough Rynn estate is lovely and those estates are fairly mature and mostly occupied. Carrick and Longford are close by for any supplies Mohill doesn't have.

Leitrim in general rocks. Anyone who comes falls in love instantly. I did anyway when I came here first in 2003 after living on Dublin's southside for 27 years. Prices are going up everywhere, even in Leitrim but you can still get a lot more for your money than anywhere else so shop around.

My advice though would be to start with a very low offer on that house and train it to Dublin from Dromod rather than drive! Maybe Air B & B it for a few weeks too to test the water.

    Nice house
Possibly overpriced but I'm not sure not familiar with Leitrim property market

Commute to Maynooth is listed at 1 hr 25

Maynooth to Dublin in the mornings is a disaster apart from summer. Which part of Dublin does he work in?

So it's going to be a pig of a commute and don't think they should do it

Get a job much closer to Leitrim, then maybe it's a runner but this is madness.

I literally just looked on myhome, dromod, rooskey etc detached homes well under 200k, & I can assure you they are closer to civilization than those lough rynn houses!

Lough Rynn to Liffey Valley is 1hr 32 minutes right now,at 10 o'clock on a Sunday night, according to Google maps.
Have you actually tried a real world commute?

Leitrim is a hidden gem. Unspoilt, so ask yourself why this is so, and why it is the least populated county in Ireland?

Lovely to live there I am sure. But I would never buy a "new" build like that in the country. Might as well stay where they are!

Anyway, the commute would be a killer. I can't understand why they don't stay in Ashbourne until retirement, and then re assess things. Selling up and paying off the mortgage is a dream for many, but the way they are going about it does not make any sense to me!

So what about medical care, hospitals, transport if either or both cannot drive for some reason, or bad weather prevents it. Same applies to anyone moving from a place like Ashbourne to the sticks. The natives know the score, but incomers might find it very isolating.

Has your family got any connections to Leitrim? I suppose I am asking why they are thinking of there in the first place.

No connections but many of the family enjoy down there and have done so for the last 4 years or so.Waterways is a big
plus ,2 train stations if needed drink, food socialising alot cheaper. The last 2 years we have seen prices jumping quite quickly from an extremely low rate and also pub, restaurants ,accomodation have also been increasing.

Sligo town would answer all medical issues,She thinks now is the right time to jump as she has said there is always and "IF" no matter were you live.

Dromod to Dublin is 90 mins at off peak times, Mohill is 10 mins further off the N4 and the Lough Rynn area is 10 mins further again. I do the Dromod journey twice a week and peak times add up to 45 mins. There is no restaurant / night scene is Mohill, you have to come to Dromod or Carrick although at their ages mentioned, Carrick may not suit them as these days it is hen night capital of the world. Much better option is to look at the Dromod / Rooskey area as there is the train option, 7 each way daily but the train journey is exactly 2 hours and Connolly may not suit as a destination. A friend of mine commutes from Mohill to Cherrywood each day and he mixes up his work times but says it is never less that 2 hrs.He has recently handed his in hos notice and moving job as he could`nt hack the commute long term. There are people commuting from Dromod but its a hard slog to do it every day. Most I know seem to stay in Dublin for 4 midweek nights and come home Friday and head back early Monday

Reading your posts sounds like you are trying to sell the properties.

210 for a Leitrim thats insane. Its normally the cheapest place in Ireland to buy property next to Donegal.

It has the highest suicide rate in Ireland I also believe.

desperate people in 2004 bought there and have never been able to buy out of the place!

    insanity
